Women's Lacrosse Knocks Off Rutgers, 13-12, in Overtime

PISCATAWAY, N.J.Penny Green scored her fourth goal of the game in overtime to lead the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team past Rutgers, 13-12, at SHI Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  The win is the third in a row for SJU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (3-2) never trailed in the game, but saw its second-half lead disappear as the Scarlet Knights scored three in a row to tie the game at 8-8.  The teams then traded goals before three consecutive Hawk goals made it a 12-9 game with 11:13 to go.

• Rutgers (4-2) would come back to tie it once again as Marin Hartshorn scored twice and then assisted on the tying goal with 2:03 remaining.

• Neither team broke the deadlock before Green gave the Hawks the win four and a half minutes into overtime.

• The Hawks jumped out to an early 5-0 lead less than 12 minutes into the game as Green, Kaela Smith, Lauren Figura, Sam McGee, and Taylor Newman-Farr all found the back of the net.  The hosts would score five of the next six, however, to send the teams into halftime with the Hawks on top, 7-5.

• Green then scored two and a half minutes into the second half to put the Hawks up by three, setting up the runs that would dominate the last 26 minutes of the game.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Green and Hartshorn led all scorers with four goals apiece.  Cassidy Spilis netted three for the Scarlet Knights, while Figura, McGee, and Bridget Cerciello each scored a pair of goals.

Mikala Davis went the distance between the pipes for SJU and made a season-high 16 saves.  She also scooped up a team-leading three ground balls, while Cerciello corralled a game-high six draws.

• Rutgers outshot the Hawks, 38-34, for the game, but SJU held a 5-1 advantage in overtime.
