Men’s Tennis Rallies for 4-3 Win Over Quinnipiac

Johnnie Massart posted two wins, including the clinching singles point, on Saturday
MEDIA, Pa. – Down 3-2 late, the Saint Joseph's men's tennis claimed the last two singles matches to pull out a 4-3 win over Quinnipiac at the Springton Indoor Tennis Club on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hawks grabbed the early lead by taking the doubles point.  Nickolas Frisk and Johnnie Massart rolled to a 6-2 win in the second flight before Eshan Kanetkar and Nathan Perrone sealed the point with a 6-4 win in the first.

• Quinnipiac (1-3) took control once singles play began, with a win in the second, fourth, and fifth flights.  In between, Francesco Mowrey earned a straight-sets win in the third.

• Perrone drew the Hawks level with a three-set win in the first flight coming from behind for a 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 win.

• That set up Massart to polish off the win, which he did by cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win in the sixth.

HAWK TALK
"We prepared very well this past week to be ready to compete against a tough opponent like Quinnipiac, who we've had a tendency to lose against in the past," assistant coach Marc Pibernat said.  "We knew it was not going to be an easy one today and we had to play and trust in our tennis abilities to do the job, which is exactly how it happened.  The team looked very composed today and that is what we need to aim for in the future, finding a balance between staying composed but at the same time being very competitive, which is what happened tonight.

"I'm very proud of the work these guys are putting in every week," he said.  "A special mention goes out to Johnnie Massart, who won both his singles and doubles matches and gave the team the clinch point at 3-3."

UP NEXT
The Hawks will return to action on February 21, when they host UConn at Springton.
