Men's Tennis Falls at Davidson, 5-2

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team fell to Davidson on Thursday afternoon by a 5-2 score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Davidson took the early lead with two wins in doubles play.  The Hawks had a shot at the point after Alex MacNeil and Francesco Mowrey were 6-3 winners in the third flight, but the Wildcats secured wins in the other two to take the early lead.

• Mowrey and Nathan Perrone were winners in the second and first singles flights, respectively.  Perrone rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 win, while Mowrey gutted out a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) win of his own.

• Unfortunately for the Hawks, the hosts would secure wins in the other four flights to earn the overall victory.

HAWK TALK
"It was a tough loss today, but the guys were competitive and showed very good energy despite everything that is going on with the coronavirus outbreak and all the information that was getting to them throughout the day," assistant coach Marc Pibernat said.  It is very sad to see the season ending because of this unique circumstance, but the health of our student athletes is in jeopardy and it is the right decision.

"I want to thank all my team for making me believe with their hard work they put in every day that something great could have happened this season.  I would like to recognize our senior and captain Luis Janko, who has fought every point he has played during his four years at SJU and that itself tells of the amazing person that he is.  And also Francesco Mowrey, who made the difficult decision to leave La Salle and join us for his last year of eligibility.  He has been with us for a short time but he had tremendous impact within the team.

"And lastly, I want to give the biggest thank you to Tim Stierle for everything he has done for the tennis program at Saint Joseph's University as a student-athlete first and then as a coach; helping not only the guys in every practice and every match but also helping Coach Ian and I with his work ethic, which this last semester he has done voluntarily.  The Saint Joseph's University tennis program would not be where it is today without Tim being a part of it."
