Financial

1. When will my athletic financial aid agreement be sent to me?
All student-athletes will be notified of their athletic aid by July 1.  An e-mail will be sent to your SJU e-mail address notifying you of your athletic aid award for the '20-'21 academic year.

Athletic Eligibility

2. I am a spring sport student-athlete, who up to this point in time, has not considered a return, but am now considering a return; who should I contact to discuss the possibility of a return?
If you are a spring sport student-athlete who meets the criteria for Eligibility Relief and is now considering a return for the '20-'21 season should contact your coach and request a meeting to discuss the possibility of a return.

3. I am a spring sport student-athlete. Will I get a sixth year if I am already in my fifth year, or have two years of eligibility remaining?
Yes, provided you were eligible for competition in the spring of 2020.

4. Who should I contact if I want to go into the transfer portal?
Student-athletes wishing to enter the NCAA transfer portal are to contact Ken Krimmel (kkrimmel@sju.edu) or Renie Shields (shields@sju.edu). The process can be conducted remotely. In addition, please note that Renie and Ken will encourage you to talk to your coaches, if you have not done so already.

5. I heard that the NCAA was considering allowing basketball and baseball student-athletes to transfer without having to sit the currently-required one year. Is that still happening?
The Division I Council approved a resolution in late May 2020 that outlined its intention to adopt by January 2021 a comprehensive legislative package creating uniform, modernized rules governing eligibility after transfer for student-athletes in all sports.

For now, the existing transfer rules are in effect – meaning that in all sports that SJU sponsors, student-athletes are eligible for the "one-time transfer exception," EXCEPT for baseball and basketball. In those sports, student-athletes are required to sit out for one year unless they qualify for a waiver.

Permissible Summer Activities

6. What can we and can't we do in terms of workouts now that the academic year has ended?
Summer workouts are guided by the NCAA bylaws and currently by federal, state and university guidelines. With that in mind student-athletes may continue to engage in the following:

Strength & Conditioning - A strength and conditioning coach may provide a workout program and pre-recorded workouts for student-athletes; however, a student-athlete may not report back any information regarding the workout to the strength and conditioning coach.

Sport-Specific - Coaches are permitted to:

• Require up to eight hours per week of virtual nonphysical countable activities (e.g. film review/chalk talk for any athletic activity that occurred prior to March 13. (Coaches cannot conduct/watch/be involved in physical activities.) During this time student-athletes must be provided with 1 day off per week.

• Provide student-athletes with workouts/drills to voluntarily perform

• Beginning June 1, student-athletes are permitted to participate in voluntary on-campus activities. However, on-campus activities are not currently permitted at SJU facilities; plans are being finalized for a return to campus for fall sport student-athletes. Spring sport student-athletes will return for the start of the academic year.

• Allow student-athletes to participate in recruiting "calls" with a coaching staff member and a prospective student-athlete (PSA) (committed or uncommitted). The time the student-athlete spends on the call counts toward the eight hours per week of countable athletically-related activity (CARA) and cannot occur on an "off" day.

7. Where can I work out this summer at SJU?
Fall sport student-athletes will return for the start of the preseason (date TBD). Currently all SJU indoor and outdoor athletic facilities are closed.

8. Will the men's and women's basketball team members participate in summer access?
Men's and women's basketball student-athletes will participate in the summer access period after the NCAA permissible date of July 20.

9. I've heard rumors NCAA may consider an earlier (or later) preseason start date for fall sports. Is there any merit to these rumors?
For this academic year, the NCAA has determined that there will be no uniform return to college sports; rather, the decision on sport start dates will be made by state officials and university presidents. At this time, SJU has not set a preseason start date for the fall and will rely on guidance from state and federal officials in making that determination.

10. Can I participate on a club team (outside team) this summer?
Beginning June 1, in sports other than football and basketball, a student-athlete may participate in outside competition as a member of an outside team. While NCAA rules permit outside competition, please be cognizant of applicable governmental and public health guidance and/or directives that are issued as well as institutional and conference rules related to COVID-19. Should you have any questions, please contact Renie Shields (shields@sju.edu) or Ken Krimmel (kkrimmel@sju.edu).

11. When can basketball student-athletes participate on outside teams?
Beginning June 15, in basketball, a student-athlete may participate in outside competition as a member of an outside team. Please note: based on existing legislation, it is permissible for men's and women's basketball student-athletes to participate in an NCAA-certified summer league beginning June 15 through August 31, or the institution's first day of classes, whichever is earlier.

The Enforcement Certification and Approvals Group has processed league applications consistent with previous years and a list of NCAA-certified leagues can be found at www.ncaa.org/basketballcertification. It is the discretion of league operators to determine if league cancellation is appropriate under current circumstances. Further, the student-athlete must have received written permission from his or her athletics director, or their designee, prior to league participation and permission is granted or withheld at the institution's discretion. While NCAA rules permit outside competition, institutions should be cognizant of applicable governmental and public health guidance and/or directives that are issued as well as institutional and conference rules related to COVID-19. Should you have any questions, please contact Renie Shields (shields@sju.edu) or Ken Krimmel (kkrimmel@sju.edu).

Physical and Mental Health

12. I'm struggling to deal with all of this…where can I get help?
Your coaches and teammates are great resources, and most of you already have team and/or individual coach meetings scheduled via Zoom or other means. Most of you also have group chats with your teammates to provide support to one another. In addition, any member of our High Performance Team is here to help. Your team athletic trainer and our sport psychologist are best equipped to help with resources.

The link to our sport psychologist for appointment scheduling can be found here: https://www.wolaninconsulting.com/copy-of-clinical-sport-psychology

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) continues to offer sessions through a call-in procedure.

The Calm App provided to all student-athletes earlier this year is another great resource. Calm has also provided us with a web page of free modules for you to utilize as well. The webpage of free Calm resources can be found here: https://www.calm.com/blog/take-a-deep-breath

Please contact your team athletic trainer via email or cell phone with any questions regarding athletically-related injuries.

14. If I was performing physician-prescribed physical therapy at SJU, how can I continue physical therapy at home?
To obtain a copy of your physical therapy prescription for at-home therapy, contact your team athletic trainer via email or cell phone or our physical therapist, Rob O'Brien, at Obrienr@mlhs.org. Please be sure you check with your insurance company to find a physical therapist who is in your network.

No sport physicals were conducted at the end of the academic year. Sport physicals will be conducted at SJU this summer; however, the dates and times have yet to be determined.

15. Should I complete a sports physical form?
Yes. An email will be sent to you, via ARMS, requesting you complete the SJU physical form, submit sickle cell trait results (incoming freshmen and transfer student-athletes), provide insurance card information and if applicable, the ADHD/ADD medication clearance form.

16. What information do I need to get to my team athletic trainer during the spring semester and summer?

18. How do I continue my athletically-related physician follow-up appointments when I am at home?
If you need assistance finding a specialty physician to align with your injury, please contact your team athletic trainer and they can assist in making a recommendation in your area. Please be sure you check with your insurance company to find a covered physician within your network. Note that medical care in the United States has been disrupted, including some elective surgery cancellations; be sure to communicate with your athletic trainer if you are having a difficult time obtaining an appointment. Your team athletic trainer can also assist in getting you a tele-health appointment with SJU team physicians.

19. How can I obtain a copy of any of my medical records?
Please contact the medical facility or healthcare provider (if physician or off-campus facility) to request that your records be released to you. If you are looking to obtain your athletic training room records from SJU, please contact your team athletic trainer to obtain the appropriate release of information and your records.

20. If I get hurt while training at home, am I still covered by Saint Joseph's University's medical care/plan?
You are covered if the activity you are performing that results in an injury is a direct result of an SJU-sponsored activity/workout provided to you by an SJU Athletics Department staff member. Remember, all workouts are voluntary.

21. Should I notify my coach and athletic trainer regarding any injuries or illnesses sustained while at home?
Yes. Please notify your team athletic trainer first if any injuries or illnesses are sustained while at home. It is also a good idea to notify your coach.
