PHILADELPHIA – As a steady rain came down at Sweeney Field Saturday night, the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team (6-8-1, 4-2-0 A-10) downed Duquesne (6-5-1, 2-2-1 A10), 3-1, to pick up its second straight league match.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Duquesne struck first when Ryan Landry sent a ball from the far side into the box for Maxi Hopfer who buried the shot.
- Less than a minute later, graduate student Omry Perel, from around midfield, found rookie Blake Driehuis up the far side of the field and Driehuis scored from the top right corner of Duquesne's box.
- During the 64th minute, junior James Fletcher was fouled in the box to award the Hawks with a penalty kick. Senior Garrett Lyons took the kick and converted to push the Hawks out in front, 2-1.
- Thirteen minutes later, Perel scored an insurance goal as he converted from the top of the box.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- SJU outshot Duquesne, 22-18, including 10-8 on frame.
- Perel finished as the Hawks' top scorer with three points on the goal and assist.
- Driehuis and Lyons add scores to their totals.
- Rookie Lars Haavie (2-5-0) picks up his second win with six saves and the lone goal allowed.
