Doran Scores Overtime Game-Winner in Men's Lacrosse's 14-13 Win over the Mount

PHILADELPHIA – Junior attackman Ryan Doran scooped up a loose ball in front of the cage and buried the game-winning goal just 55 seconds into overtime to send the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse squad past Mount St. Mary's, 14-13, in Northeast Conference action on Sweeney Field on Saturday afternoon. With their fourth consecutive victory, the Hawks improve to 4-3 overall (4-0 NEC) while the Mountaineers fall to 1-7 overall (0-3 NEC).

"I saw the ball pop out of the goalkeeper's stick, and it fumbled around a bit and just found my stick," said Doran, who was swarmed by his teammates following the goal. "I just put it away. It's a great team win, and it feels awesome to be 4-0 in the league."

Doran and sophomore attackman Matt Bohmer finished the day with hat tricks while senior attackman Matt Tufano turned in a team-high four points on a goal and three assists.

Junior face-off specialist Zach Cole went 20-for-31 from the X with 14 ground balls while senior goalkeeper Tucker Almany (4-0, 4-0 NEC) made nine saves and came up with two key caused turnovers in the full 60:55.

How It Happened
First Half –
Mount St. Mary's scored the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 edge by the 11:29 mark of the first quarter, but Saint Joseph's stormed back to score seven of the game's next nine goals to take a two-goal lead, 7-5, by the 5:55 mark of the second quarter. Junior midfielder Tucker Brown (Q1, 10:19) and Doran (Q1, 4:06) put away unassisted scores before Bohmer took a feed from junior midfielder Matt Popeck and hit the back of the net with five ticks remaining in the first quarter.

Junior midfielder Levi Anderson then converted the EMO for SJU (assisted by senior midfielder Evan Campbell) to equalize at the 12:35 mark of the second, and on the ensuing possession, Cole won the face-off and took it himself to the cage for the go-ahead goal, 5-4, at 12:29.

Mount St. Mary's Matt Haggerty equalized at the 8:06 mark to tie it up, 5-5, but Brown (6:45, assisted by graduate student midfielder Nate Patterson) and Doran (5:55, assisted by Tufano) scored back-to-back goals to put the Hawks back up by two. The Mountaineers got one back 46 seconds before the halftime break as the Hawks saw themselves up by one, 7-6, at the intermission.

Second Half – Mount St. Mary's face-off specialist Sam Stephan scored off the face-off win to open the third quarter (14:54) with an equalizer, 7-7, but the Hawks responded with back-to-back scores from Campbell (14:25) and Anderson on another EMO (13:42, assisted by Tufano) to regain the two-goal edge, 9-7. The Hawks and Minutemen would then alternate in scoring for the remainder of the quarter, with SJU keeping its two-goal edge, 12-10, into the fourth.

Mount St. Mary's tore off back-to-back goals to equalize (8:19, 6:48) halfway through the fourth quarter before Matt Haggerty converted on the EMO to put the Mountaineers up by one, 13-12, with 1:28 remaining in regulation.

The Mountaineers won the ensuing face-off possession, but Saint Joseph's junior close defenseman Logan Blondell stripped MSM's Luke Frankeny (1:12) and Saint Joseph's junior long stick midfielder Sean Voelkel scooped up the ground ball to gain possession for the Crimson and Gray (1:07).

MSM was then hit with an offsides penalty (:53) to put the Hawks man-up for 30 seconds, but the Mountaineer defense killed off the EMO. However, with six seconds left in regulation, Tufano found Bohmer, and the sophomore buried the equalizer to force overtime.

Overtime – Cole's 20th face-off win of the day opened the overtime period, and the Hawks took a flurry of shots leading up to Doran's goal; Anderson's shot was saved (3:08) and went back into play, and Campbell scooped the ground ball and took a quick shot (3:07), but that was also saved as the ball once again came back into play. Doran got possession and hit for the game-winner.
