TOWSON, Md. – A four-run top of the seventh propelled the Saint Joseph's softball team to an 8-4 season-opening victory at Towson on Friday afternoon.
Hot it Happened
• The Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the third as newcomer
Payton Baxter singled home
Sarah Ostaszewski to make it 1-0.
• Towson tied the game in the bottom of the third on a fielding error by SJU.
• Saint Joseph's struck for three runs in the top of the fourth as
Kirstin Cox hit a two-run triple to rightfield, and came around to score on a RBI groundout by
Molly Kapala.
• Behind a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers tied the score at 4-4.
• With runners at second and third and no outs in the top of the seventh, Ostaszewski drilled a double to centerfield, scoring
Jordan Hinkle and
Nicole Bondoc to put the Hawks ahead 6-4.
• Advancing to third on fly out, Ostaszewski came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Kapala to extend the lead to 7-4.

Caela Abadie added an insurance run in the next at-bat as the graduate student drilled a solo shot over the centerfield wall to make it 8-4.

Amanda Herr wasted little time in the bottom of the inning as the junior pitcher struck out the first two Tigers and induced a pop up to end the game.

• Cox finished the day 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs driven in and a run scored.
• Abadie went 2-for-4 with the her first home run of the year.

• Rookies Bondoc and
Carli Davy each collected their first collegiate hits and stolen bases.
• As a team, nine Hawks combined for 13 hits on the day.
• In the circle, Herr was credited with the win as she tossed two scoreless innings of relief, striking out four Tigers along the way.

Saige Stutz went 5.0 innings in a starting role for SJU and allowed three earned runs on seven hits, while striking out four.
