Men’s Soccer Powers Past UMBC With Two Late Goals

PHILADELPHIA  – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team grabbed the first victory of the 2022 season, overcoming an early deficit in the second half with two goals in the final 22 minutes to defeat UMBC 2-1 on Tuesday evening at Sweeney Field.

With the win, the Hawks move to 1-2-4 on the year while the Retrievers fall to 5-2-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was the visitors with the first opportunity in early stages of the game, calling Hawk goalkeeper Luis Ludosan into action in the second minute. The German native cleanly collected to his right from a shot just inside the box to keep the visitors from an early opener.
  • After a lengthy spell of possession from the Retrievers, the hosts grabbed their first shot of the game with Chris Hunt getting on the end of a shot but firing over the bar.
  • Shots in the 20th and 22nd minute by Hunt and Blake Driehuis both forced the UMBC goalie into action, but neither were able to find the back of the net.
  • A barrage of corner opportunities and half chances for the Hawks saw them grow into the game over the final 15 minutes of the opening half but were unable to capitalize as they went into the break tied at 0-0.
  • Both teams traded possession over the course of the first 15 minutes of the second half, but the visitors had the first opportunity to find the score sheet. A tackle inside the box from Garrett Lyons was deemed to be a foul, giving UMBC a penalty. Ryan Becher made no mistake from 12 yards out and fired past Ludosan.
  • The Hawks fired back for the equalizer 11 minutes later as Truls Brændvang was credited with his first goal of the season. The sophomore found himself stood in the path of Garrett Lyons' shot on target, deflecting off the Norwegian and into the back of the net.
  • In the 85th minute, the Hawks found the winner. Blake Driehuis found possession of the ball down the right-hand side of the field, cutting back onto his left foot and firing a shot that found the far bottom corner to give the Hawks just their second lead of the season.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • The Hawks outshot the Retrievers 14-11 on the night, a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Ludosan recorded five saves on the evening.
  • Lyons grabbed his second assist of the year, while both Brændvang and Driehuis scored their first of the season.
  • The Hawks have led for just over eight minutes on the season.
  • Tonight proved the first time that SJU found multiple goals, nearly doubling their output prior to the match of three on the season.
  • Driehuis, Perel and Hunt all finished with three shots on the night.
  • It was only the second time all season that UMBC recorded fewer than two goals in a match, the other coming in their only other defeat at Mount St. Mary's
