Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Senior Night Spoiled for Men’s Soccer in 1-0 Defeat to Loyola

PHILADELPHIA – In a night started with a celebration for the Saint Joseph's men's soccer senior class, the Hawks were unable to secure victory as an early Loyola (Md.) proved the difference in a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday evening on Sweeney Field.

St. Joe's falls to 3-11-1 on the season while Loyola moves to 5-1-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks grabbed the first chance of the game, Luke Johnson driving down the right side of the pitch before firing a cross to Bart Kooistra. The Dutch forward did well to leap to it, but was only able to flick the header harmlessly over the ball.
  • Some industrial work from Loyola found the visitors in good position for a quick attempt after forcing a turnover near the endline, Charlie Herley picking the ball up inside the box and firing at the keeper. Trevor Jackson matched the effort, able to parry it safely back into his grasp.
  • Loyola found the net on the second time asking in the 14th minute after a long ball over the top was dealt with by Alex Hartmann. Charlie Herley picked up the loose ball and was able to weave past a defender before sliding his attempt past Jackson to give the visitors the lead.
  • A battle in the midfield ensued throughout the final 30 minutes of the first half, Loyola registering two shots – neither hitting the target – to close out the opening stanza.
  • A good spell of possession in the second half saw the Hawks with a few chances through Kooistra in a matter of minutes. The first effort glanced off the Dutchman's boot to go wide, Kooistra's second attempt curling but too close to the Loyola keeper who comfortably made the save.
  • The Hawks' final chance came in the 78th minute, as once again the Crimson and Gray were able to find quick interchange throughout the attacking third. A quick outlet to Blake Driehuis saw the junior forward burst down the left, fizzing a cross in low and out of the reach of the defense. Patrick Vani met the cross at the back post, striking clean and low back on goal but again the Loyola keeper was up to the challenge as he made the reflex save.
