BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell in overtime defeat, 10-9, to Lehigh on Wednesday afternoon inside the Ulrich Sports Complex.
The Mountain Hawks grabbed their first win of the season, while St. Joe's falls to 0-2 in the early stages of the 2023 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks showed early signs of attack, looking to find the opening goal as Maddie Yoder and Sarah Groark had a pair of shots on goal in the opening seven minutes.
- Despite a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal, the Mountain Hawks opened the scoring on their first shot on target. Lehigh doubled its advantage with just over a minute remaining in the opening quarter to take a 2-0 lead after the first frame.
- Just a minute into the second quarter, the Hawks grabbed a goal back through Bonnie Yu. Receiving the pass from Emma O'Neill, Yu drove through the heart of the Mountain Hawk defense and fired low and past the Lehigh goalkeeper for her first of the season.
- Lehigh countered, adding another two goals in a span of under four minutes to push the lead up to 4-1.
- With just over a minute remaining in the first half, a pair of rookies connected to again chip into the lead as Sarah Groark found Kate Fuhrman, who ripped her attempt into the back of the net.
- After Yu's ensuing draw control, the Hawks went straight down the field as O'Neill turned from provider to scorer as her goal with 31 seconds remaining cut the Lehigh advantage to 4-3 heading into the break.
- The Hawks would complete the comeback to equal the scoring just a minute into the third quarter, Lisa Ross getting in on the action for her first goal of the season.
- O'Neill grabbed her second of the match through a free position goal before Yoder got into the action after four goals in the season-opener against #2 Maryland, her first of the afternoon the fifth-straight of the game for SJU to give St. Joe's its first lead.
- Riley Evans made it six unanswered for the Hawks to lead 7-4 before Lehigh responded with its first goal of the half.
- The Mountain Hawks made it two-straight goals before O'Neill's hat trick extended the lead back to 8-6 for SJU. The hosts kept fighting with another goal with four minutes left in the third, the final tally of the period as the Hawks headed into the final frame with a 8-7 lead.
- Maggie Davidson delivered her first goal of the season just moments into the fourth, but a goal for Lehigh at nine minutes cut the deficit to 9-8 before Gabby Schneider delivered a game-tying goal with just 24 seconds remaining.
- The Mountain Hawks found the winning goal in overtime, using an extra man opportunity to grab their goal with four minutes remaining in the frame.
