Women's Lacrosse Makes History With Program’s First Shutout in Conference Opening Win

PHILADELPHIA – In a cold and dreary day on Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team was anything but. The Hawks scored early and often, cruising to a 19-0 win in the conference opener against George Mason to post the first shutout in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • As both teams looked to gain the early advantage, it was the Hawks behind a free position strike from Kate Fuhrman that opened the scoring nearly five minutes into the contest.
  • Fuhrman played provider five minutes later, assisting Maggie Davidson for her first goal to double the Hawk advantage.
  • The goals came thick and fast to end the quarter, the Davidson goal sparking a run of four goals in the span of three minutes after Bonnie Yu's strike with two minutes to play in the opening frame gave SJU a 5-0 lead.
  • Riley Evans grabbed her first of the game off a Yu assist just 45 seconds into the second quarter. St. Joe's would tally four in the opening five minutes to extend the lead to 9-0.
  • Maddie Yoder's 13th goal of the season found the back of the net with 3:50 to play before Sarah Groark's hat trick would set the game at 11-0 in favor of the Hawks heading into the break.
  • Yu opened the second half with her second goal of the game just 50 seconds into the period. More than six minutes elapsed, but the Hawks struck with another tally from Fuhrman as freshman Alexa Capozzoli played provider for her classmate.
  • Only two minutes later, Capozzoli closed out the scoring in the third frame with her first of her career, pushing the Hawk lead to 14-0 with 15 minutes to play.
  • The rookie would strike again on the other side of the quarter for her second of the game. Lauren Iorio then took her opportunity to net her first career goal under a minute later.
  • Debut goals from Ellie Webb and Emily Smith were sandwiched by Iorio's second of the game and a shutout saving save from freshman Regan Bestick off a free position opportunity from the Patriots, rounding out the scoring for a 19-0 win on Sweeney Field.
