PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team fell in the final seconds as the Hawks dropped a 13-12 overtime heartbreak to #16 Penn on Wednesday evening at Sweeney Field.
The loss moves St. Joe's to 3-2 on the season, dropping back-to-back games by a one-goal margin. Penn moves to 2-2 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Quakers got off to a quick start, firing off to a 2-0 lead before the crowd had tome to blink with just under two minutes elapsing on the clock.
- The Hawks would respond over the next five minutes as Stephen Dwyer led the charge to open the game. A minute later, Patrick Clemens would lead the charge down the field before finding a cutting Levi Anderson who fired home to level the score. The Hawks grabbed their first lead after Anderson turned provider to find Matt Bohmer for his first of the evening.
- Penn responded in fashion, another 2-0 spurt in a span of 43 seconds giving the visitors a 4-3 advantage.
- Carter Page would once again level the scoring but the Quakers responded in the final minute to take a 5-4 lead after 15 minutes of play.
- After a quick Penn goal to begin the second, Bohmer tallied his second after Zach Cole's face-off win and drive down the field, finding the senior who made no mistake and fired home. The two-goal advantage dwindled to a tie game once more as Collin Campbell slotted home his third goal of the season in man-up fashion.
- Penn scored two of the next three goals over the final eight minutes of the half to take an 8-7 lead at the break.
- With nearly a nine-minute scoring drought between the two teams on the other side of the half, Dwyer broke the deadlock with his second of the contest to again tie the game.
- After another response from Penn, Anderson scored two goals in under a minute to push the Hawks into the lead
- Penn responded with a goal with 10 seconds remaining as the two teams were deadlocked at 10-10 heading into the final frame.
- The Quakers struck first in the fourth quarter, scoring the opening goal of the frame just two minutes in. It took nearly a minute for the Hawks to respond through Tucker Brown.
- St. Joe's was forced to respond once again after a Penn goal, doing just that. Bohmer netted his fourth goal of the contest with four minutes remaining as neither side were able to find the winner in the closing stages, forcing the first overtime game of the season for the Hawks.
- After winning the face-off in overtime, the Quakers capitalized on their first possession to find the back of the net and steal the victory in a 13-12 thriller on Sweeney Field.
GAME NOTES
- Matt Bohmer paved the way for the Hawks with four goals, two assists and six points - all team-highs.
- After being held scoreless for the first time in 12 games against Johns Hopkins, Anderson responded with three goals and two assists on the evening.
- Carter Page continues his 17-game scoring streak with a goal in the defeat, converting four of his nine shots on target.
- Zach Cole won 21 of his 29 face-off attempts and recorded 13 ground balls.
- Robbie Seeley logged all 61:30 minutes in goal and made six saves on his night.
- St. Joe's outshot the Quakers 41-31 and held a 26-19 advantage in shots on goal.
- Four of the last five games in this matchup have been decided by a goal, including the last three games being a 13-12 scoreline in favor of the Quakers.
- This was the fourth overtime game in the last eight meetings between the sides, Penn holding a 3-1 advantage in those games.
