Hawks Clinch Share of Atlantic 10 Regular Season Title With 11-10 Win Over UMass

PHILADELPHIA – An evenly contested matchup saw the Hawks tally two goals late, securing at least a share of the Atlantic 10 Regular Season title as SJU defeated UMass, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field.

Concluding the game, the Hawks recognized 16 seniors as part of the annual Senior Day festivities. St. Joe's also celebrated at least a share of the inaugural Atlantic 10 regular season title, with a chance to claim it outright with a win next week.

SJU has won its last 19 conference games, moving to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in A-10 action. UMass falls to 7-5 on the season, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visitors started the scoring off just over a minute into the matchup, taking the early lead.
  • With more than 10 minutes on the clock, the Hawks struck back as Levi Anderson found William King who rippled the netting to level the score.
  • St. Joe's was once again called into action to recover from a trailing position, this time the left-handed Stephen Dwyer taking it himself from a deep midfield run before blasting an attempt past the Minutemen goalkeeper.
  • The Dwyer goal sparked a 3-0 Hawk run, bookended with another Dwyer tally as Matt Bohmer grabbed the goal in between to give the Hawks their first lead of the afternoon. SJU would end the first frame with a 4-2 advantage.
  • After a goal in the opening minute of the second quarter from UMass, Carter Page responded for the hosts with the counterpunch just 40 seconds later after a quick scoop to the upper frame of the goal.
  • Less than a minute later, sophomore Griffin Mallory would score his first collegiate goal, sweeping through the UMass defense before firing past the keeper to extend the advantage to 6-3.
  • Colin Reick would score to counter a Massachusetts goal, but a drought over the final 11:17 for SJU allowed the visitors to crawl back into the game, earning three goals in that span to level the score at 7-7 at the intermission.
  • For the third-straight quarter, UMass opened the scoring within the first two minutes take the first lead since the first quarter. Short lived, Bohmer responded with his second of the game and 20th of the season.
  • A near eight-minute goal drought from UMass was deleted after Gabriel Procyk found the netting, while St. Joe's were able to cut their 12:10 goal drought as Alex Keener tallied the first of the season off a Bohmer assist as the Hawks thought they had leveled the game going into the third quarter.
  • Over the final 36 seconds, the Minutemen gathered possession and with time winding down, Mason Bregman finished home as time expired to give the visitors a goal advantage headed into the final frame.
  • Transitioning after a blocked UMass attempt, Levi Verch picked up the loose ball and carried it from end to end. With no one stepping up to the sophomore defender, the Canadian let loose an attempt, bouncing low and past the UMass goalkeeper to level the score again with 11:18 remaining in the quarter.
  • Zach Cole won the ensuing face-off and the Hawks would collect, Levi Anderson scoring his only goal of the afternoon to give the Hawks the lead with 10:13 remaining in the ball game.
  • With both defenses tightening up, the Hawks looked to outlast the Minutemen and keep them off the board. With eight shot attempts in the final 10 minutes, St. Joe's was able to do so as the barrage of shots paid no dividends and the Crimson and Gray were able to ride out the final 18 second possession from the visitors, UMass failing to get a shot off as time expired to give St. Joe's an 11-10 win on Senior Day.
