Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hawks Fall to Drexel in Opening Night Matchup

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell to city rival Drexel on Thursday afternoon, both teams kicking off the 2023 season in a cagey affair. Seven yellow cards were issued between the two sides as the Dragons bested the Hawks 2-0 on Sweeney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks were able to provide early pressure on the Dragons, gaining multiple opportunities in the opening minutes that were spurned by the offside flag.
  • Despite the positive start, the visitors were able to capitalize off pressure in the SJU defense before Dominick Bachstein found open space as the Drexel forward snuck home the opener just six minutes in.
  • Half chances by both teams were all that was mustered over the next 20 minutes before Lars Haavie was called into action for the first time of the night, making a strong save to deny the Dragons in the 25th minute.
  • With the game moving to a contested battle in the middle of the pitch, it was Drexel who was once again able to find a break. Joshua Pulla was fed inside the box, lashing at an attempt that went straight into the ground before looping over an oncoming Haavie and into the side netting to put the visitors up by two, a lead they would take into halftime.
  • Haavie opened up with a pair of saves in the first five minutes of the second half, denying the Dragons from extending their lead.
  • As both teams looked to push through fatigue late in the game, Haavie was called into action for his fifth and sixth saves in the final five minutes. After meeting an oncoming defender and making a kick save to keep the Dragons out, the Hawks were able to spill into a counterattack of their own.
  • Herman Tveit-Reffsgaard picked up possession 25 yards out, taking a look at the goal before unleashing an attempt on frame that troubled the Drexel goalkeeper Alessandro Capogna. Capogna spilled the attempt to his right but cleaned up on the follow up attempt from Blake Driehuis to keep his clean sheet intact with just moments left on the clock to ensure a 2-0 win for the visitors on opening night.
