PHILADELPHIA – Despite mounting sustained pressure through extended portions of the second half, the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Boston University after an early goal in the first half gave the visitors the edge in a Thursday night matchup on Sweeney Field.
The Hawks fall to 0-3 on the season, while Boston U moves to 2-1 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In his first start in the Crimson and Gray, Trevor Jackson was the first goalkeeper to be tested on the night after seven minutes. The graduate transfer shot stopper cleanly matched the Terrier effort to make the first save of his season.
- Only moments later, the Hawks came inches away from the first goal of the season through freshman Patrick Vani. The Canadian forward took a man on one-on-one, pushing the ball to his right and quickly firing from the right side of the box to the far post. Despite beating the goalkeeper, the ball struck firm off the left post and bounced safely into the keeper's hands as Boston U were able to escape early danger.
- The Terriers converted on their luck, a looping ball playing Andrew Rent in behind the Hawk defense. The forward was able to pick out a pass to Daniel Kim who buried the effort into the back of the net to put the visitors up in the 11th minute.
- In the 25th minute, Jackson was called into action again as the Texas native denied Kim's second goal of the night, keeping the Hawks down by just one goal.
- A couple half chances created by the Terriers came to nothing as BU headed into the locker room with a slim advantage.
- With a change of formation to start the second half, the Hawks quickly got on the gas and created their first attempt just 13 seconds in as Bart Kooistra's lovely footwork allowed him to dance past defenders before curling a ball to the near post that just missed wide.
- Kooistra once again was the start of an attack as the Dutch forward weaved his way to the endline, cutting a ball into the box where an off balanced Blake Dreihuis extended himself to try and place it into the back of the net. The shot glanced off his feet, as again the Terrier defense was able to take collect themselves.
- Pressure continued to mount for the visitors as St. Joe's established a bulk of possession for large portions of the half, but the Terriers used counter attacks wisely to craft chances of their own as Jackson was called into action on two more occasions throughout the final 30 minutes.
- Despite attempt after attempt to find a breakthrough, including a driven attempt from outside of the box from Mikkel Andersen that goalkeeper Francesco Montali had to properly deal with, the Hawks couldn't find the breakthrough.
- The last attempt came with seconds left on the clock with Philipp Wujewitsch finding space down the right side. A dangerous ball put into the box by the sophomore found the feet of Fletcher Caponecchia, the Australian looking to put an attempt on goal as Terrier bodies swarmed to make the last-ditch block. Despite multiple appeals for a foul in the box, the referee waved away the claims and Boston U cleared as time struck zero as the Hawks were left with a narrow defeat on home soil.
