Men’s Soccer Settles for 1-1 Draw at La Salle in A-10 Opener

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer opened Atlantic 10 conference play with a 1-1 draw against La Salle on Saturday evening at McCarthy Stadium.

With the draw, SJU moves to 2-4-1 (0-0-1 A-10) on the season while La Salle sits at 3-2-2 (0-0-1 A-10).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither side were able to cause trouble in the opening 15 minutes as both midfields looked to establish a footing into the game.
  • St. Joe's arguably earned the best chance of the early stages as Bart Kooistra was played through on goal. A denial from the La Salle keeper saw the ball dribble towards the endline, but the Dutch forward's second bite at the cherry was unable to get the angle right as it hit the side netting.
  • SJU's last chance of the half came in the 40th minute as Philipp Wujewitsch's cross caused danger for the La Salle defense, the goalkeeper electing to parry it out for a corner kick.
  • Both teams entered the break level at 0-0, St. Joe's holding a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Hawks wasted no time in the second half to find some offense. To no one's surprise, it was once again through Blake Driehuis that the Hawks took the lead in the 48th minute. A picture-perfect cross from Truls Brændvang found the darting Driehuis, who glanced the header into the far netting to open the tally.
  • Continual pressure from the Hawks nearly paid off as the Hawks almost doubled their lead through the efforts of Kooistra. The Dutchman forced a save out of Filip Sabatti, looking the more likely of the sides to grab a goal.
  • However, it would be the hosts that would equalize from the penalty spot in the 84th minute. Weaving into the box, an Explorer attack lost balance and the center ref deemed enough contact from the Hawk defense to warrant a penalty, Omri Ezra slotting home from the spot to level the scoring.
  • St. Joe's nearly took the lead in the 87th minute as Alex Hood found acres of space down the left-hand side. Hood lashed an effort with his weaker left foot, but Sabatti was once again able to answer the call as both teams would settle for an eventual 1-1 draw to open A-10 play.

QUICK NOTES
  • Driehuis has now scored six times in the last four games, matching his total output from the first two seasons combined. Brændvang tallied his second assist in the last three games.
  • A quiet night for Lars Haavie saw the junior only face three shots on goal, grabbing two saves before the penalty.
  • St. Joe's outshot La Salle 9-8 on the night, 5-3 in shots on goal.
  • The Hawks earned four corner kicks, while La Salle tallied five on the evening.
  • St. Joe's remains unbeaten on the road this year, 2-0-1 in the opening three games away from Sweeney Field.

UP NEXT
  • The Hawks continue a road stand when they face Monmouth on Tuesday, September 19 in a 7 p.m. contest.
