Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Driehuis Nets Winner as Men’s Soccer Dispatches Dayton in Downpour

PHILADELPHIA – The Hawks did something that hasn't been achieved since 1995 as head coach Don D'Ambra and the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team defeated Dayton on Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 contest in a gusty downpour on Sweeney Field.

Breaking a streak of 19 games without a win over the Flyers, Blake Driehuis' tally in the 60th minute proved the difference as the Hawks (3-5-1, 1-0-1 A-10) remain unbeaten in early stages of the Atlantic 10 season. Dayton falls to 2-6-1 on the year, 1-1-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With conditions slated to worsen throughout the opening 45 minutes, both teams were looking to get a foot into the game as the visitors showed the first sign of threat, a shot by Miles Bonham equally matched by SJU goalkeeper Lars Haavie on 10 minutes.
  • James Fletcher tried to respond moments later, as his lashed attempt trailed wide of the post as the Dayton keeper remain untroubled.
  • The Hawks needed a goal line clearance from the defense as Philipp Wujewitsch headed out a Flyer attempt off a corner to keep the game goalless.
  • Haavie once again was called into action, safely controlling an effort by UD's Manny Day in his arms, the last threatening chance of the half in a 5-2 advantage in shots for the away side.
  • Blake Driehuis had the best chance of the early stages of the second half, as a crafty Bart Kooistra was able to get to the endline and play the cross into the junior forward whose first-time finish just missed on the other end of the right post.
  • A similar attack only moments later saw the industriousness of Kooistra pay off as Driehuis wouldn't miss on his second bite at the cherry. The Dutch forward weaved through multiple defenders before curling a ball off balance into the path of Driehuis. Taking a look up, Driehuis lifted his attempt over the head of Dayton goalkeeper Dario Caetano and wheeled away in celebration as the Hawks took the lead in the 60th minute.
  • As the Hawks looked to defend their slim margin, Dayton spent the majority of the last half hour with the possession en route to five shots over the final 23 minutes of play. None of the first four shots were on goal as a resilient Hawk defense was able to limit the quality of chances for the Flyers.
  • With under 15 seconds left, a last gasp attempt from Dayton almost was answered but Lars Haavie stood tall and from six yards out, came up with his final save of the afternoon to ensure a 1-0 conference win for the Hawks on Sweeney Field.

QUICK NOTES
  • Blake Driehuis has now grabbed seven tallies to his name on the year, tied for first in the Atlantic 10 in goals. Driehuis has scored the game-winner in all three victories this season for the Crimson and Gray.
  • Kooistra was rewarded for another top performance, the assist for the game-winner marking his third of the year to go along with his two goals this season.
  • Haavie and the defense shut out an opponent for the first time this season, the Norwegian goalkeeper with four saves on the afternoon.
  • St. Joe's remains unbeaten in conference play with a 1-0-1 record.
  • The Hawks broke a four-game losing streak at home for their first win of the season at Sweeney Field, while Dayton falls to 0-4 on the road.
  • The win over Dayton was the first since the series opener in 1995, having gone winless in the last 19 attempts (now 2-17-2).

UP NEXT
  • The Hawks have a quick turnaround, hosting Yale in non-conference action on Monday, September 25. The kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
