Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rossetto Nets Late Winner to Push Men’s Soccer Past Rhode Island

PHILADELPHIA – Tommaso Rossetto found the back of the net in the 87th minute to give the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team a 3-2 win over Rhode Island on Saturday evening, capping off the home finale at Sweeney Field in thrilling fashion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks threatened the Rhode Island goal on multiple occasions over the opening minutes. The pressure paid off as the St. Joe's attack broke through in the 10th minute. A brilliant exchange between Campbell McIntyre and Luke Johnson set up a pass that played Patrick Vani through on goal and the sophomore tucked it past the goalkeeper from eight yards out.
  • Rhode Island equalized in the 24th minute after Iñigo Etxegarai raced past his defender and slotted his shot into the back netting.
  • Five minutes later, McIntyre regained the lead for St. Joe's with the first goal of his career. A lose ball near the top of the box made its way to McIntyre as he thumped an attempt through the traffic and over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms to restore the lead for the Hawks.
  • Rhode Island had a defender sent off early in the second half, forcing the visitors to play the final 35 minutes of the game with 10 men.
  • Despite the disadvantage, Rhode Island earned an equalizer in the 59th minute after a clinical finish from a counter tied the game at 2-2.
  • St. Joe's nearly pulled an immediate response after Tommaso Rossetto dribbled past the Ram goalkeeper near the edge of the 18-yard box and passed it off to Oskar Steinicke. A Rhode Island defender desperately scrambled to block Steinicke's shot off the goal line. The ball deflected off the Ram just wide of the goal post and out for a corner kick. The set piece was dealt with by the Rhode Island defense as the Hawks continued to try and find the winning goal.
  • The advantage in numbers paid off as St. Joe's finally found the breakthrough with three minutes to play. Rhode Island committed more numbers to the attack, exposing a gap in the defense as McIntyre found a wide open Rossetto. The Italian took two dribbles and expertly slotted his shot past the goalkeeper before heading to the corner flag to celebrate the game-winning goal.
  • The Hawks were able to ward out all late efforts from the Rams, registering a 3-2 win in front of the Sweeney Field faithful in the home finale.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Tommaso Rossetto's game-winning goal was the second tally of the season for the forward.
  • Luke Johnson added an assist in the win, registering his fourth assist in his last three games.
