Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short in Late Comeback Attempt to Colorado

PHILADELPHIA – Trailing by three goals in the second half, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team saw its comeback bid stalled by a late Colorado goal as the Hawks suffered a 7-6 loss on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
 
St. Joe's falls to 0-2, while Colorado goes unblemished in its east coast trip to move to 3-0 on the year.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Colorado struck first, holding the Hawks out of the net for the opening eight minutes to build a two-goal cushion.
  • St. Joe's responded with a strike from Bonnie Yu, scoring her first goal of the season on her free position opportunity.
  • The Hawks tied the game through Emma O'Neill almost five minutes later before Colorado answered with a late goal to take a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.
  • Colorado held the Hawks scoreless in the second, extending the advantage to 5-2 at the half.
  • Kate Fuhrman connected on her first goal of the year to open the third quarter scoring, finishing the feed from her sophomore counterpart Alexa Capozzoli.
  • Six minutes later, Maddie Yoder tallied a goal of her own to again cut the deficit to one.
  • After a response from the visitors, Fuhrman again played finisher on a Capozzoli assist to narrow the margin to 6-5 with 15 minutes to play.
  • Yoder's second goal of the game leveled the contest with 4:18 to play, but Colorado answered on the next possession to again establish a one-goal lead.
  • The Hawks had one last chance to tie the game, but a turnover forced by the visitors allowed Colorado to run out the clock to a 7-6 victory on Sweeney Field.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Jorden Concordia proved a fortress in goal for St. Joe's, saving 16 of the 23 shots on target for a .696 save percentage.
  • Maddie Yoder and Kate Fuhrman combined for two goals apiece, Alexa Capazzoli assisting twice on the afternoon.
  • The Hawks were outshot 29-14 on the day, Colorado putting 23 of the 29 shots on target. The visitors won the draw control battle 11-6.
 
UP NEXT
The Hawks continue the three-game home stand to start the season with a Friday, February 23 matchup against UConn. Action at Sweeney Field is slated for 1 p.m.
