VILLANOVA, Pa. – For the second consecutive game, the Hawks scored early and never looked back as St. Joe's led wire-to-wire in the 14-7 win at Villanova on Wednesday afternoon.
Back-to-back wins give the Hawks a 2-2 record on the season, earning a victory in their first road trip of the season. Villanova falls to 2-3 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maddie Yoder started the scoring off only 90 seconds in, cutting past her defender before striking the back of the net to put the Hawks up.
- The Hawks extended the early lead with goals from Kate Fuhrman and Emma O'Neill, forcing Villanova into a timeout with four-minute remaining in the opening frame.
- Villanova responded with a goal after replay started, but Jorden Concordia limited the damage with a save as time was expiring in the quarter to give the Hawks a 3-1 advantage.
- After the Wildcats struck first in the second quarter, Lisa Ross responded with a goal after being fed by freshman Megan Sanelli.
- The goal started a four-goal run for the Hawks, Bonnie Yu and Sarah Groark and adding goals before Yoder struck the net for her second of the game to put the Hawks up 7-2.
- Villanova finished with the final three goals over the course of the final six minutes of the half to decrease the deficit to 7-5 at the break.
- Alexa Capozzoli started the scoring off in a third quarter that saw the two teams alternate goals, Yu finishing the frame off with an unstoppable effort from range to put St. Joe's up 10-7 with only 15 minutes to play.
- Yoder all but ended the threat of a Wildcat comeback with two goals over the first nine minutes of play, putting the Hawks up 12-7.
- After a well-worked offensive move was capped off by a Capozzoli strike to the bottom corner, Emma O'Neill tallied the fourth goal of the quarter for St. Joe's with under 20 seconds remaining to finish an emphatic final quarter as the Hawks cruised to a 14-7 victory on the road.
GAME NOTES
- Maddie Yoder finished with a career-high five goals in the contest, also leading the team with five draw controls.
- Alexa Capazzoli ended her afternoon with two goals and two assists, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the year setting season-bests in the win.
- Emma O'Neill is now eight points shy of 100 career points with her two goals on the afternoon.
- Lisa Ross added a goal and three assists, moving into sixth all-time in program history in assists with 58 on her career. Ross is two points shy of reaching 100 points in her St. Joe's career.
- Jorden Concordia, who entered the week first in the country in saves per game, saw her least amount of action on the season with just seven saves on a .500 save percentage.
- Kaylyn Williams has a standout game in her sophomore season, causing four Wildcat turnovers.
- The Hawks outshot the Wildcats 34-24 on the day, including a 22-14 advantage in shots on goal. St. Joe's also won the draw control battle 14-11.
- St. Joe's has won four of the last five against the Wildcats.
