PHILADELPHIA – Trailing at the break, the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team used a 10-2 second half effort to breeze by St. John's on Saturday afternoon in a 15-8 win on Sweeny Field.
After an 0-3 start, the Hawks have now won three of their last three games to improve to .500 on the year at 3-3. The Red Storm falls to 2-7 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tommy Gross opened his afternoon in goal with a save on the opening possession to help keep the Red Storm out of the net early on.
- Levi Anderson tallied the first strike of the game after teammate Matt Bohmer found the Canadian for his 10th tally of the season.
- A quick three-goal run from St. John's gave the visitors a 3-1 lead, but Carter Page helped drag the Hawks back level with two goals over the final six minutes of the quarter as the teams shared a 3-3 score after 15 minutes.
- Matt Bohmer tallied two strikes in the second quarter, sandwiched in between goals from the Red Storm on each end as St. John's took a 6-5 advantage into the halftime break.
- Trae Ika found the netting for just his second goal of the season to level the game early in the second half.
- Trailing for the fifth time of the game, the Hawks tied the game for the final time of the afternoon after Bohmer completed his hat trick to level the score at 7-7.
- A solo effort from Colin Reich gave St. Joe's its first lead since 1-0, more than half an hour of game time between the two leads as the Hawks took an 8-7 advantage. Page joined Bohmer in hat trick territory, finishing a 4-1 third quarter with a tidy finish with under two minutes to put the hosts up 9-7.
- The Red Storm opened the fourth frame with an early goal to draw within one, but it would be the final time the visitors struck paydirt as Bohmer would start a 6-0 run to end the game.
- In the closing stages, Jesse Jason added to his number on the year with a pair of goals, including a man-down goal to seal the victory as the redshirt freshman raced past a host of defenders before finding the netting for the Hawks' 14th of the game.
- Carter Page capped the offensive burst in the second half with his fourth of the game with only 1:34 to play as St. Joe's earned a 15-8 victory on home soil.
GAME NOTES
- Matt Bohmer ended his afternoon with four goals and an assist, moving to second all-time in program history with 124 career goals.
- Carter Page made it 33 consecutive games with a goal, matching Bohmer with four goals and an assist of his own.
- Levi Anderson added two goals in the win, combining for 10 goals in his two games against St. John's.
- Anderson and Page are tied for fourth all-time in goals scored in SJU history, each of the two tallying 116 strikes on their career.
- Jesse Jason moved to double-digits on the season with two goals on the day, pushing him to his 10th in his rookie campaign.
- Colin Reich rounded out the group of Hawks with multiple goals with two goals of his own after being held without a goal last time out for the first time in nine games.
- Ryan Bradley ended the day with three caused turnovers to lead the Hawks, Patrick Clemens adding two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
- Anderson (183) and Bohmer (182) are fourth and fifth in the program in points scored.
- Tommy Gross earned his third consecutive win, finishing with nine saves and a .529 save percentage.
- The Hawks held a 39-34 advantage in shots and a 26-18 advantage in shots on target, forcing St. John's into 17 turnovers on the day.
- The Red Storm went 17-26 from the X, an impressive performance from Dane Armstrong seeing the St. John's face-off specialist going 17-25 on his afternoon.
- The Hawks move to 4-1 all-time against the Red Storm.
