NORFOLK, Va. – Saint Joseph's women's rowing team posted a strong outing this weekend at Lafayette River, taking three of four races against Old Dominion on Saturday, after a impressive showing against Monmouth.
How It Happened
• Saint Joseph's opened the weekend with a scrimmage against Monmouth in three 1000m profile races.
• The Hawks placed first in all six of its races that featured Varsity 8s and 2nd Varsity 8s.
• On Saturday, St. Joe's Varsity 4 had a solid lead heading into the last 500m when they had to stop to get re-pointed through a bridge, and despite a gutsy effort to try and get back in it, fell short with the rough water in the last 250m to finish in a time of 8:34.29.
• The Hawks' 2nd Varsity 8 had a bit of a rough start, but showed a lot of poise for a young boat as they set the pace of the race in the 2nd 250m en route to crossing the line first in 7:27.94.
• Saint Joseph's 2nd Varsity 4 had a tough battle with Old Dominion as the water got a bit bumpier as conditions worsened a bit, but they pull together a strong victory, slugging it out in a time of 8:49.85.
• The Varsity 8 had a strong start and hammered through the rough stretch to maintain a full length open lead from the 1000m, and dictated the race from there, winning in a time of 7:06.94.
Hawk Talk (with Head Coach Gerry Quinlan)
• "Our pieces with Monmouth were a great tuneup for us, as we were preparing for Old Dominion on Saturday. We had a strange week of practice - between the fatigue of Winter Camp, weather and being a short week - we were just disjointed a bit and had trouble getting into a rhythm. Lining up with Monmouth really helped us to get re-centered."
• "We mixed all of the boats up a bit from last week as we continue to press towards the A-10s. We raced port stroked in the Varsity 8 this week, last week we were starboard stoked, just because we can and it's March. We have a couple of strong stroke seats and we want to try different combinations in these opening regattas. We are really learning to adapt and make adjustments. We appreciate the great racing from Old Dominion and Monmouth."
