Backed by the Varsity 8's victory, the Saint Joseph's women's rowing team had a strong showing at Saturday's Jesuit Invitational.
How It Happened
• Opening the morning in time trials with very fast conditions with a tremendous amount of rain and a tailwind, Saint Joseph's advanced to the grand final in all three events as the Hawks' Varsity 8 (6:32.3) placed first in their trial, while the 2nd Varsity 8 (6:52.0) and Varsity 4 (7:33.7) each finished with the second-best times.
• In the Varsity 8 Final, Saint Joseph's found itself down to Boston College at the 1000m mark, but mounted a very deliberate comeback to best the Eagles by just under a second, 6:19.3 to 6:20.2.
• In the 2nd Varsity 8 Final, the Hawks put a strong showing together, besting their time trial by nearly 14 seconds to place second in a time of 6:38.3.
• St. Joe's Varsity 4 also placed second in its final as the Hawks finished the course in 6:25.8.
Hawk Talk (with Head Coach Gerry Quinlan)
• "We did a great job of listening to the boat and adapting to the conditions. Tailwind and tail current are a raceday equalizer, and we raced very tactfully across the board today."
• "We really rowed a strong race and our learning curve is huge in these boats. We are excited to have a train-thru week and see how much further we can go."
