FAIRFAX, Va. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team cruised to a 21-9 win on a rainy Saturday afternoon,
Lisa Ross breaking the school record with eight assists to help cap off the regular season.
St. Joe's ends the regular season with a 10-6 record, including a 6-3 record in conference play to clinch the #4 seed at the Atlantic 10 Tournament. George Mason falls to 10-7, 4-5 in Atlantic 10 play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lisa Ross was busy in the opening minutes of the game, first finding the back of the net from a feed by Alexa Capozzoli. The graduate student then played provider after the ensuing draw control, Olivia McCloskey weaving through traffic to finish of Ross' assist for a quick 2-0 lead.
- Bonnie Yu made it a quick three-goal advantage less than five minutes into the game, driving downhill before planting and cutting back towards her right. The senior fired low and the ball rolled past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
- Ross made it 4-0 after picking up the ball behind the goal, wrapping around the net and slotting it home after a pump fake.
- After three goals from the visitors brought the score within one, Emma O'Neill cut the George Mason run with a free position goal to push the lead to 5-3 after the first quarter.
- After a Jorden Concordia save, the Hawks went coast-to-coast through Bella Miceli as the junior defender weaved her way through traffic and took it on her own to open the scoring in the second quarter.
- Bonnie Yu followed shortly after with her second of the day, extending the margin back to four to make it 7-3.
- An answer from the Patriots looked to spring the hosts back into the game, but the Hawks tallied four unanswered goals, including a hat trick from Sarah Groark, to push the lead to 11-4 at the half.
- Both teams traded goals over the opening seven minutes of the second half, McCloskey and O'Neill earning their second goals of the day to keep the advantage at seven.
- Maddie Yoder scored the final goal of the third to double the Patriots' tally at 14-7 with 15 minutes to play.
- The Hawks scored three goals in the first five minutes of the quarter, including a pair of goals from Capozzoli before Yoder found the net from a Capozzoli assist. Ross earned her fifth assist of the afternoon in that span, helping the Hawks push the lead to 17-7.
- After George Mason closed the gap to single digits, the Hawks scored the last four goals over the final six minutes. Ross assisted on three of the four goals, breaking the school record in assists in a game with her eighth as McCloskey recorded her first career hat trick to give St. Joe's a 21-9 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Lisa Ross scored more points than George Mason as a team, responsible for 10 points after scoring twice and setting the new program record with eight assists in a game. Ross previously tied the school record at seven in the win over George Washington.
- Sarah Groark and Bonnie Yu each tied for a game-high four goals in the win, Yu collecting her four goals on just four shots.
- Olivia McCloskey added her first hat trick of her career after getting the start, entering the day with just four goals on the season.
- Maddie Yoder also added a hat trick with three goals on the afternoon, all coming within the final 18 minutes of the game. Yoder has scored three goals in every conference game except one, leading the team with 39 goals on the season. Yoder also added a pair of caused turnovers and a team-high six draw controls.
- Alexa Capozzoli also padded the stats on the day, adding three assists to her pair of goals in the win. The sophomore has surpassed 50 points on the year, one of just seven Hawks with 30 assists in a single season.
- Emma O'Neill was the final Hawk with multiple goals, finishing with three points with a pair of goals and an assist.
- Bella Miceli scored from defense, adding a team-high five ground balls with a caused turnover in the win.
- Both MaryRose Berry and Bella Schorr added two caused turnovers. Each also added three ground balls.
- Jorden Concordia finished her afternoon with 12 saves on a .571 save percentage, adding a caused turnover and a pair of ground balls to her performance.
- St. Joe's held a 37-29 advantage in shots and a 19-12 advantage in draw controls.
- The 21 goals were a season-high and the second time on the year that the Hawks scored 20+ goals. St. Joe's held an opponent under 10 goals for the seventh time on the season.
- For the seventh consecutive season, the Hawks have won at least 10 games. It is the eighth time in program history that the Hawks have posted 10+ wins, seven of the eight coming under head coach Alex Kahoe.
- The Hawks also secure their eighth consecutive winning season.
- St. Joe's has won six of the last seven games against George Mason.
