Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short; Hawks Bow Out of Atlantic 10 Semifinals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team nearly overcame a six-goal deficit on Friday afternoon, the fourth quarter rally coming up short as the Hawks fell 10-9 to UMass in the Atlantic 10 semifinals.

The Hawks end their season with an 11-7 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks opened the scoring on the afternoon, Lisa Ross finding Bonnie Yu for her 33rd goal of the season.
  • Despite the early strike, the top overall seed settled into the game with three goals in nearly four minutes to give the Minutewomen an advantage.
  • Holding the Hawks scoreless the remainder of the quarter, UMass extended its advantage to as many as 7-1 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.
  • The Hawks grabbed a goal back with 47 seconds in the half, Bonnie Yu dumping a pass to Maddie Yoder, who slipped past a pair of defenders before firing through the legs of the goalkeeper.
  • Yoder doubled her tally with six seconds left in the half, decreasing the deficit to 7-3 entering the half.
  • Yu made it a run of 3-0 in the opening stages of the second half, a solo effort bringing the hawks within three.
  • Kate Fuhrman fought through contact to tally her first goal of the game, countering a UMass goal.
  • Building on the momentum, the Hawks came out of the fourth quarter and ripped three consecutive goals. Sarah Groark tallied all three of the strikes, recording a hat trick in just two minutes of action to level the game at 8-8.
  • The Minutewomen responded with a goal to put them back in the lead, but only momentarily as the Hawks countered with a goal from Emma O'Neill.
  • Trailing 10-9, the Hawks were faced with yet another defensive possession. St. Joe's was able to force a turnover, giving them a minute to tie the game. Yu was able to gain a step on her defender, but UMass Catrina Tobin made her season-high 14th save of the game to keep the Hawks out of the net as UMass was able to run out the clock and survive in a 10-9 battle.
