Men’s Soccer Suffers Narrow Defeat to Bryant

PHILADELPHIA – A goal in the first 15 minutes proved the deciding factor in a game that saw the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fall 1-0 to Bryant on Tuesday evening on Sweeney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visitors found the opener in the 12th minute after registering their fifth shot in the opening quarter hour of play.
  • St. Joe's looked to answer eight minutes later, Tommaso Rossetto lifting the ball over the top of the defense for Bart Kooistra, who cleverly dribbled past the goalkeeper before being taken out on the goalie's slide. The ensuing penalty from Blake Driehuis trailed wide, unable to level the score from the spot.
  • Campbell McIntyre had the best opportunity in the closing stages, the Hawks nearly taking advantage of a set piece as the delivery was sent to the far post. The header back to the middle of the box found McIntyre darting into frame, who tried to contort his body and was only able to flash his effort over the bar.
  • On the other side of the half, Luke Johnson was able to create enough space to get a shot away. The junior poked an attempt on frame, but was unable to beat the Bryant goalkeeper.
  • The Hawks were able to limit the chances from the Bulldogs in the second half as Lars Haavie made a diving save to deny a Bryant attacker in the only chance of the opening 35 minutes of the frame.
  • Extending forward to try and find an equalizer, Haavie once again was called into action in the closing minutes with a double save to deny the second goal from the visitors. St. Joe's was unable to find the equalizer, however, falling 1-0 to the Bulldogs after 90 minutes.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Hawks were outshot 22-6 on the night by the Bulldogs, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on target.
