Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Haavie Shines, Men’s Soccer Earns Result at Loyola (Md.)

BALTIMORE, Md. – In a game that included 27 shots, the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team used a gritty defensive performance to earn a result in a 0-0 draw with Loyola (Md.) at the Ridley Athletic Complex on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Loyola produced early chances, jumping out to a quicker start to force Hawk goalkeeper Lars Haavie into three saves in the opening 10 minutes.
  • The Hawks grew into the game, but were unable to put shots on target after Bart Kooistra and Sean Boyle both headed harmlessly over the bar in a five-minute span.
  • The best chance for either side came in the 32nd minute, Tommaso Rossetto flashing a shot on his left foot that stung off the hands of the Greyhound goalkeeper. The rebound fell back to Rossetto, who was able to half volley an attempt on his right foot but trailed just wide of the far post.
  • Just like in the first half, Haavie was called into action early. The Norwegian shot stopper stood on his head, with a pair of reflex saves able to keep the hosts off the board in the first five minutes of the second half.
  • Blake Driehuis made a brilliant tackle in the attacking third, regaining possession to slip Matteo Mazzotta in on goal. The midfielder tried looping his shot over the keeper, the slightest of palms able to push the attempt off frame and keep the Hawks off the score.
  • Rossetto again tested the keeper with a shot from distance, able to win a corner for the Hawks. The set piece led to another opportunity, Kooistra flashing his header just wide of the post.
  • Kooistra once again found himself an opportunity after Luke Johnson played him in, his shot taking a deflection after a last-ditch attempt by a defender to win another Hawk corner.
  • Driehuis almost found the winner in the 88th minute, stretching out on a Truls Brændvang cross with no one around him, his glancing effort only able to take it wide of the post.
  • The hosts nearly found the winner of their own, a shot glancing off the defense and back to the attacker. The second attempt was driven low and to Haavie's right, the keeper able to get down quick and collect the rebound to save a result.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Loyola held a 17-10 advantage in shots on the evening, a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
