Men’s Soccer Battles Loyola Chicago to a Draw

PHILADELPHIA Saint Joseph's men's soccer battled Loyola Chicago to a scoreless draw Wednesday evening at Sweeney Field.

With the result, Saint Joseph's moves to 4-4-3 overall (1-2-2 Atlantic 10) with five points in the conference standings. Loyola Chicago moves to 4-3-5 overall and 1-1-2 in A-10 play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening 30 minutes were defined by half-chances and midfield battles before Tommaso Rossetto nearly curled an effort into the top-right corner from 18 yards out.
  •  A handball in the box gave the Hawks a chance to break the deadlock in the 41st minute. Matteo Mazzotta, entering the game 3-for-3 from the spot on the season, sent his attempt over the bar as the teams remained level at 0-0 headed into halftime.
  •  After the Rambler goalkeeper mishandled a cross in the box, Glen Lala found possession just outside of the six-yard box. The midfielder lashed a shot on target, but the Loyola Chicago defense scrambled it off the line to preserve the scoreless draw.
  •  The Hawks continued pressing for a breakthrough, with a corner kick falling to Kobe Perlaza at the back post in the 75th minute. The defender volleyed past the goalkeeper before being denied by the crossbar. The rebound found Luke Johnson, but the senior couldn't steer his effort on frame.
  •  Loyola Chicago's lone effort on target came in the 88th minute, but the attempt was tame and safely handled by Cooper Jennings as the teams settled for a 0-0 draw.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Hawks held an 11-4 advantage in shots, Glen Lala recording the only attempt on target. St. Joe's is 3-0-3 when holding the edge in shot attempts.
  • Cooper Jennings was tested just one time in goal, making a save to preserve his third clean sheet of the season.
  • Jake Ross played 58 minutes in midfield to earn his first start as a Hawk.
  • SJU remains unbeaten at home in the first five games of the season, holding a 3-0-2 record on Sweeney Field.
