Fourth Quarter Frenzy Falls Short in Women’s Lacrosse Defeat to Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa.Half of the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team's 10 goals came in the final 15 minutes, but an early deficit proved too steep for the Hawks in a 14-10 defeat to Villanova on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. Joe's opened with the first three goals coming from different scorers as Kate Fuhrman, Sarah Groark and Lauren Iorio combined to find the net in the opening seven minutes.
  • A quick 3-0 run from Villanova leveled the scoring with five minutes to play in the opening quarter. The Wildcats added a fourth with under 30 seconds to play to take a 4-3 lead after the opening frame.
  • After Villanova added two goals to double its advantage at 6-3, the Hawks were able to end the six-goal spurt from the Wildcats after Emma Yoder cleanly finished an effort from a free-position attempt.
  • The Wildcats added the final three goals of the first half to take a 9-4 lead at the break.
  • Four of the five goals scored in the third quarter went the way of the Wildcats, while Fuhrman tallied her second of the game with the lone strike for the Hawks.
  • Maddie Yoder scored 15 seconds into the final frame and added a second four minutes later to cut the deficit to six. 
  • The Wildcats responded with a goal of their own with under 10 minutes to play to push the lead back to 14-7.
  • Despite a pair of goals from Groark and another strike from Maddie Yoder, the Hawks left it too late as Villanova was able to run out the remaining four minutes to take a 14-10 win.

GAME NOTES
  • Maddie Yoder was one of two Hawks to finish with three goals on the afternoon, securing her second-consecutive hat trick to start the season.
  • Sarah Groark also scored a hat trick as her three-goal tally marked her first multi-goal game of the season.
  • Alexa Capozzoli provided a creative spark with four assists in the defeat, while junior teammate Kate Fuhrman was the final Hawk with multiple goals (2).
  • Emma Yoder has registered goals in each of her first two collegiate games and added three caused turnovers against the Wildcats.
  • Jorden Concordia finished with nine saves.
  • The Hawks won 15 draw controls compared to Villanova's 12 wins. Kaitlin Nieczpiel led the team with six, while Maddie Yoder added four draws.
  • Villanova finsiehd with a 30-21 advantage in shots and tallied a 23-15 margin in shots on goal.

UP NEXT
The Hawks open its home campaign on Saturday, Feb. 15 when they play host to Penn State. The Nittany Lions enter Sweeney Field ranked 22nd in the country. First draw is set for 1 p.m.
