Men's Lacrosse Routs Monmouth, 12-3

PHILADELPHIA – Ben Dutton tallied five goals and the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team never trailed in a 12-3 rout of Monmouth at Sweeney Field on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Dutton got things started for the hometown Hawks four minutes in and then doubled the lead two minutes later.  Nick Teets cut the deficit to 2-1 for Monmouth two and a half minutes later, but Mark Watters, Jesse Jason, and Braedon Chayes tallied in quick succession to push the SJU lead to 5-1 after the opening quarter.

• Ty Caffarelli netted his first of two on the day for Monmouth (0-3) four minutes into the second quarter, and the score remained at 5-2 until Dutton capped off the first half with his third of the day with 45 seconds to go.

• Saint Joseph's (1-2) extended the lead just 78 seconds into the third quarter through Trae Ika before Caffarelli made it a 7-3 game 45 seconds later.  Dutton answered a minute later with his fourth goal of the day, then added his fifth with 1:27 to go in the frame to send the Crimson and Gray into the final stanza with a 9-3 lead.

• Jason got his second of the day five minutes into the fourth quarter, while Ika doubled his own tally three minutes later.  Then, after assisting on the first goal of the day, Griffin Mallory scored the final one with just over six minutes to go to close out the scoring.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Saint Joseph's outshot Monmouth, 41-28, while holding a slight 10-9 edge in face-offs.  Monmouth was 2-for-6 on extra-man opportunities, while SJU was 1-for-3.

• Charlie Giachetti had an outstanding collegiate debut in the cage for SJU, making 15 saves to earn the win.  Tommy Heller also made 15 stops for Monmouth.

• Dutton's five goals matched Ryan Doran and Mike Rastivo for the most scored by a freshman in a single game in program history.

• The three goals allowed by the Saint Joseph's defense matches the fewest goals conceded in a single game during head coach Taylor Wray's tenure.
