Malito Homers for 100th Career Hit as Softball Downs Monmouth

MERION STATION, Pa. - Hailey Malito recorded the 100th hit of her career as the Saint Joseph's softball team downed the Monmouth Hawks 9-3 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Malito and Riley York both homered in the game. Malito drove in three during the contest while York had two RBI.
  • Sarah Cancila, Sierra Fretz, Kasi Loser and Marla Freiwald each had an RBI.
  • Eight different batters recorded one hit for SJU.
  • Every player who either hit or ran for St. Joe's either scored or drove in a run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scoreless into the third, the bottom of the order got the offense started for SJU. Jenna Currie lined a ball to left that careened off the glove of the fielder, allowing her to reach. Next up was Marla Freiwald, who smacked a double for her first career hit, driving home Currie for a 1-0 lead.
  • Freiwald promptly stole third and came home on a groundout by Loser.
  • With two outs and the bases empty, Sarah Cancila got the inning restarted with a single through the middle. That brought up Malito who clubbed her second homer in three games for her 100th career hit and a 4-0 St. Joe's lead.
  • Monmouth came back right away in the top of the fourth as a pair of homers sandwiched a walk, pulling the contest back to 4-3.
  • Saint Joseph's kicked the offense back into gear in the fifth as Loser and Kayla Tauber singled to start the frame. Loser moved third on a fly out before coming in to score on a groundout.
  • Riley York was next to hit and delivered her third homer of the season, upping the lead to 7-3.
  • Keeping the inning moving, SJU saw Meghan Sinkus single and steal second in front of Fretz, who delivered a run scoring hit of her own, making it 8-3.
  • St. Joe's scored its final run of the game in the sixth as it loaded the bases on walks before a sac fly from Cancila sent pinch-runner Morgan Lester across the plate.
  • Freiwald (4-2) picked up the win, only allowing the runs in the fourth. Jules Scogna came on in relief and authored three scoreless for the save.
