Women’s Lacrosse’s Win Streak Snapped in Defeat to UMass, 14-11

PHILADELPHIA – A late charge was not enough for the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team, falling in a 14-11 defeat to league-leading Massachusetts in Atlantic 10 action on Wednesday afternoon on Sweeney Field.

A four-game win streak to open A-10 play was snapped for the Hawks, falling to 5-7 (4-1 Atlantic 10) on the season. UMass moves to 7-3 (5-0 Atlantic 10) on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Minutewomen opened with the opening four goals of the game before Emma Yoder delivered the first goal of the game for St. Joe's to cut the deficit. UMass added its fifth of the frame to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the quarter.
  • The Hawks opened the second frame with goals from Ellie Webb and Maddie Yoder in the opening deficit to draw within two before the Minutewomen responded with a quick counter of its own to extend the lead to 6-3.
  • A three-goal burst from the Hawks leveled the game at 6-6, Riley Miller starting the charge with a bouncing effort that found the back netting. Alexa Capozzoli capitalized off a turnover on UMass' clear attempt for a goal before Maddie Yoder earned her second of the day to equalize the score.
  • UMass scored three goals in the final 4:13 of the opening half to take a 9-6 lead into the break.
  • The visitors opened the second half with another three-goal spurt in a 5:11 span to double the lead at 12-6.
  • Emma Yoder broke the Hawk drought with her second tally of the day, but UMass responded with the only goal in the final nine minutes of the frame to push the advantage to 13-7 headed into the last frame.
  • A quick pair of strikes through Sarah Groark and Webb to start the fourth quarter gave the Hawks a glimpse at a comeback bid before a five-minute span without goals from either team was disrupted by a strike from the Minutewomen.
  • Capozzoli countered with a quick reply to match UMass, but one goal from the Hawks over the final seven minutes proved consolation as St. Joe's fell in a 14-11 defeat to disrupt its four-game win streak.
