PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team cruised to a 15-7 win over Hobart on Saturday afternoon, celebrating its senior day in style on Sweeney Field.
St. Joe's improved to 9-3 on the season and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Hobart falls to 3-9 on the year and 0-3 in the A-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Over five minutes of scoreless play was interrupted after Richie LaCalandra began his busy day with the opening goal.
- Jack McGorry scored his second goal of the season, beginning a 3-0 burst in a 1:40 span after Griffin Mallory and Braedon Chayes helped give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
- St. Joe's capped off its five-goal quarter after Ben Dutton finished off a Levi Verch feed while the defense kept the Statesmen off the scoreboard.
- The visitors tallied twice in the opening four minutes of the second frame to break their goal drought before Dutton ended the quick spurt with his second tally.
- Tyler Moore and Christian Marchini added goals to increase the advantage to 8-2 with 4:29 to play in the half.
- After a Hobart goal cut the advantage, both teams traded goals off the restart as Conor Trant won the faceoff and raced towards the goal, finding LaCalandra for the feed. Six seconds later, Hobart responded and cut the deficit back to five.
- An assist from LaCalandra to Dutton in an extra-man advantage along with a goal from Trae Ika with five seconds remaining gave the Hawks an 11-4 lead headed into the break.
- Almost identical goals restarted the half, LaCalandra feeding Dutton twice in the opening two minutes on extra-man opportunities built a 13-4 lead before LaCalandra went on his own to grow a double-digit advantage.
- Hobart scored the final three goals of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 14-7, but the Hawks scored the lone goal of the final frame as LaCalandra netted for the fourth time to give the Hawks a 15-7 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Ben Dutton scored five goals for the second-consecutive game, the fourth time this season the freshman has tallied at least five goals. The rookie moved into a tie for ninth in single-season history with 38 goals, extending his freshly set record for most goals scored by a freshman in program history.
- Richie LaCalandra led the way with a game-high eight points, scoring four goals and tallying four assists in the win. The eight points matches a season-high, setting a season-best with his four strikes.
- Nine other Hawks finished with at least a goal or an assist.
- Ryan Bradley and Liam Quinn helped pace the defense to just seven goals allowed, leading the team with three caused turnovers each. Bradley added five ground balls in the win.
- Danny Gaalaas added a pair of caused turnovers, while Levi Verch capped off his senior day with a caused turnover, an assist and five ground balls.
- The Hawks held Hobart scoreless (0-5) on extra-man opportunities, going 3-6 in the attack with a man-up advantage.
- The Statesmen finished just 11-20 from clears, St. Joe's finishing 17-21. The Hawks held a 15-30 margin in turnovers.
- SJU held a 27-10 advantage in shots on goal despite only a 36-34 discrepancy in shots.
