PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's softball team delivered a season-high 13 hits as the Hawks outlasted the Drexel Dragons in a slugfest, 9-7 on Wednesday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sierra Fretz drilled a second inning homerun for her 100th career hit as the Saint Joseph's softball team
- Hailey Malito had three hits in the game, with a homer and and a double.
- Sarah Cancila recorded three hits. Riley York had two.
- Taylor Trowbridge tossed 3.2 scoreless innings, fanning four.
- It was the fourth game this season SJU reached double digits in hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks jumped on the board in the opening frame with the third homer of the season for Hailey Malito.
- After the Dragons got three on the board in the bottom of the first, SJU went back to work in the top of the second. With one out in the inning, Fretz clubbed her seventh homer of the year. It was her third consecutive hit that went out of the yard and the 100th hit of her career.
- Two batters later, Hailey Peterson doubled. Kasi Loser followed with a single on a sinking line drive to tie the score at 3-3.
- St. Joe's kept the foot on the gas in the third as with one out, Sarah Cancila singled and Malito reached on an error, sending the runner across the plate for a 4-3 Hawks' lead. Riley York singled, moving Malito to third. York subsequently stole second. Meghan Sinkus grounded a ball to short that was unable to be handled by the fielder, advancing all runners a base, making it 5-3.
- Sinkus stole second to put to in scoring position as Fretz lifted a sac fly to right, scoring York. Jenna Currie came up and singled, pushing the advantage to 7-3.
- Drexel scored a pair in the fourth. In the sixth, the Dragons threatened, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Taylor Trowbridge struck out the final two baters of the frame to preserve the lead.
- In the seventh, Cancila added some insurance with her second long ball of the year, extending the lead to 8-5. Up next, Malito doubled off the centerfield wall and advanced to third on a single from Sinkus. Saint Joseph's then executed a double steal to bring home a run and make it 9-5.
- The insurance proved crucial as the Dragons scored twice in the seventh before St. Joe's shut the door.
- Trowbridge (6-5) earned the win in relief with her scoreless effort, scattering three hits.
