Levi Verch of men's lacrosse and
Sarah Cancila of softball have been selected as nominees for the Allstate NACDA Good Works Team for their work int he classroom and their positive impact on their community.
A senior from Victoria, British Columbia, Verch was named to the 2025 Preseason Tewaaraton Watch List and is a USA Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American. In his junior season, he was an All-American honorable mention after being named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, while also earning First Team All-Conference, College Sports Communicators Academic All-District nods to go along with Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area plaudits. He is in the top three in program history for caused turnovers and has the second-most caused turnovers in single-season history for St. Joe's, holding the program record for most caused turnovers in a single game. Verch is currently fourth in NCAA in caused turnovers per game and ground balls per game by a non-faceoff specialist.
Verch is part of 4Stop Lacrosse, partnering with various youth lacrosse programs in the Philadelphia area: Gompers, Harlem, Ashbee, Wisslax, Haddonfield, Saanich, Cowichan. As part of the program, Verch helps run summer camps for over 100 participants, volunteers at youth camps (50+ participants), helps host an annual youth day (this year was for our Villanova game) while helping run a gear drive and an after school care lacrosse program. The goal of 4Stop Lacrosse is to grow the game, provide gear for underprivileged kids and work locally and globally to serve as an ambassador to the game while providing a positive experience/mentorship. In addition to helping with 4Stop Lacrosse, Verch and the men's lacrosse team have participated in neighborhood clean ups in the West Philly area.
Cancila enters the week on the leaderboard in the Atlantic 10 in runs (29 - 5th), doubles (8 - T-7th), triples (2 - T-7th), walks (21 - 7th), stolen bases (10 - T-9th) and batting average (.330 - 12th). She has started 156 consecutive games for the Hawks, has a career slash line of .293/.405/.409. She is four hits away from becoming the 27th SJU softball player to record 150 hits in her career.
The Woolwich, N.J. native founded the Hidden Opponent chapter at SJU and is now the club president She is a member of Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society Member, a Campus Ministry weekly service volunteer and is a SAAC Executive Board member and the organization's Community Service Representative. She has a 3.52 cumulative GPA.
The Allstate NACDA Good Works Team is an initiative to recognize and honor student-athletes across all sports and divisions who demonstrate levels of volunteerism and civic engagement that are above and beyond their success and achievements in the classroom and competition. The goal of the program is to provide recognition for these future community leaders, their teams, academic institutions, and the communities they support. Finalists are announced on April 21.
