Women’s Lacrosse Earns 14-10 Win Over Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team has earned wins in six of its last seven games behind a five-goal performance from Maddie Yoder in a 14-10 win over Duquesne on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hawks improve to 7-7 on the year and sit 6-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while Duquesne falls to 5-8 with a 2-6 A-10 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks opened with four goals in a two-minute span to propel to a 4-0 lead after Maddie Yoder started the scoring with one of two Alexa Capozzoli assists on the afternoon.
  • Riley Miller started a three-goal spurt over a 40 second span after finishing a dish from Kate Fuhrman before Emma Yoder and Capozzoli added free-position goals.
  • A pair of goals from the hosts cut the deficit in half before Capozzoli scored her second of the quarter to put the Hawks up 5-2 after the opening 15 minutes.
  • Only three goals were scored over the second period, Maddie Yoder registering goals at the start and end of the frame as her third goal of the day gave the Hawks a 7-3 lead with 11 seconds to play, capitalizing for the first of four goals scored over an extra-woman opportunity after a Duquesne defender was brandished a red card in the closing stages of the half.
  • Sarah Groark capitalized early in the third frame after a goal-line clearance allowed the Hawks to get out in transition, spinning past a defender before cutting past another to finish from close range.
  • Groark soon scored her second in a two-minute span before Capozzoli showed some flair with a behind-the-back effort going away from goal to grow the lead to 10-3.
  • Fuhrman turned scorer for her lone goal of the day, capping off a 5-0 run from the Hawks to increase the lead to a game-high eight goals with five minutes to play in the third quarter.
  • Duquesne closed the frame with three goals, cutting the St. Joe's advantage to 11-6 to begin the final 15 minutes.
  • The Dukes cut the lead to four with 11 minutes to play, but two goals from Maddie Yoder and a strike from Lauren Iorio countered each Duquesne tally the remainder of the game as St. Joe's earned the 14-10 road victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Yoder's six-point performance was the ninth game of the season with a hat trick and the 11th multi-goal game of the year for the senior. Yoder sits three goals shy of tying Lauren Figura for third all-time in program history, sitting at 149 career goals. Yoder added four draw controls, moving into a tie for seventh in career draw controls.
  • Alexa Capozzoli moved into 10th all-time in points at St. Joe's, surpassing Lisa Ross and Meghan McDevitt with her three-goal, two-assist performance. The junior is one goal shy of tying Rebecca Lane's 84 career assists for third place in program history.
  • Kate Fuhrman added a goal and a team-high four assists in the win, registering five or more points in four of the last five games.
  • Sarah Groark's two goals move her within eight of 100 career points.
  • Bella Miceli added nine draw controls in the win, one shy of matching her personal best recorded in last weekend's win over Rhode Island. Miceli has won at least six draws in each of her seven conference games this season. The senior added three caused turnovers in the win to match her season-high while recording four ground balls.
  • Quinn Howe registered a new career-high with four caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Bella Schorr also added a career-high three caused turnovers.
