WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite playing the final 35 minutes down a man, the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team secured its second consecutive victory with a 2-0 shutout of George Washington on Tuesday afternoon at GW Soccer Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- George Washington created the best chance of the opening 20 minutes, as Foday Bangura headed a set piece just over the crossbar.
- Saint Joseph's nearly responded when Mark Mazzoni broke behind the defensive line, but his left-footed attempt from 12 yards was held by the diving GW goalkeeper.
- The Hawks broke through moments later as Finn Murray delivered a set piece into the box and Diego Avelar headed home into the right corner.
- Sebastian Perez-Gasiba nearly doubled the lead in the 52nd minute, beating his defender to cut inside onto his right foot before his curling effort was saved by the GW goalkeeper.
- Saint Joseph's played the final 35 minutes with 10 men after a video review resulted in a straight red card for Jake Ross.
- Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Hawks earned an opportunity to double their lead as Charlie Undorf raced onto a through ball, pushing it past the goalkeeper before being brought down in the box to earn a penalty. Conor Clair stepped to the spot and slotted his attempt low and beyond the goalkeeper's outstretched hands to give St. Joe's a 2-0 advantage.
- Just minutes later, the Revolutionaries earned a penalty of their own following a challenge inside the box. Alex Smith denied Joe Brayson from the spot before reacting quickly to turn away the rebound, preserving the Hawks' two-goal advantage.
- A chance in the 87th minute was the best opportunity for GW to get back into the game, but the improvised scissor kick from Jake Pool flashed off the crossbar as the Hawks were able to hold on for a 2-0 road win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Avelar and Clair each netted their second goal of the season. The duo also found the back of the net in a 2-0 win over LIU earlier this season, with Avelar opening the scoring before Clair doubled the advantage.
- Finn Murray recorded his first point of the season with an assist on Avelar's opening goal.
- Alex Smith finished with three saves, including a penalty stop and a save on the ensuing rebound, to secure his sixth clean sheet of the season. Smith sits one shutout shy of matching the program's single-season record and currently ranks among the top three freshmen in program history in save percentage (.790) and goals-against average (0.93).
- The Hawks have scored five goals over their last two matches, matching their total from the previous six contests combined.
- The shutout marks the first time since 2014 that Saint Joseph's has recorded six clean sheets in a single season.
- Saint Joseph's has won three of its last four meetings with George Washington, earning just its fourth road victory in 19 all-time visits to GW.
