CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's softball team got off to a hot start, but had a comeback fall just short as the hawks were downed, 4-3, by the James Madison Dukes on Friday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Meghan Sinkus had two hits and drove in all three SJU runs.
- Jules Scogna got the start and tossed 4.1 innings, allowing one run and striking out three.
- Grace Brown had two hits on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- James Madison got on the board in the top of the first inning, but St. Joe's took the lead in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Brown singled up the middle. Julia Shearer and Lauren Stalica were each hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sinkus followed with a single through the left side, bringing home Brown and Shearer for a 2-1 SJU edge.
- The game remained that way until the top of the fifth when the Dukes added a run on a passed ball to tie the game.
- JMU followed with three runs in the sixth, taking a 4-2 lead.
- St. Joe's did not go quietly in the bottom of the seventh. Elyssa Hasapis singled and two batters later, Shearer walked. A groundout moved the runners to second and third with two away for Sinkus. The senior singled through the right side. Hasapis came in to score, but Shearer was thrown out at the plate to end the game,
