NEWARK, Del. — A late rally came up just short as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-12 decision to Delaware on Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.
Delaware (8-4) opened the scoring five minutes into the contest before Saint Joseph's (5-7) responded with back-to-back goals from
Kate Fuhrman and
Kate Kaptrosky — both assisted by
Alexa Capozzoli — to take the lead midway through the first quarter.
Olivia McCloskey added a late goal as the teams entered the second quarter tied at 3-3.
The Hawks built the largest lead of the first half early in the second quarter, as Kaptrosky and
Devon Maillet scored to make it 5-3. McCloskey added her second goal of the game to help Saint Joseph's take a 6-5 advantage into halftime.
Delaware opened the second half with four of the first five goals to take a 9-7 lead. Capozzoli answered late in the third quarter to trim the deficit to one heading into the final period.
Saint Joseph's cut the deficit to one on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, but Delaware responded each time to maintain its edge. The Blue Hens pushed the lead to three with 3:47 remaining before the Hawks answered with two goals to make it a one-goal game with 1:54 left. Saint Joseph's was unable to regain possession in the closing moments as Delaware held on for the 13-12 win.

- Riley Bittinger totaled three points (two goals, one assist), while Olivia McCloskey and Kate Kaptrosky each scored twice.
- Tess Talbot made five saves in goal.
- Delaware held advantages in shots (27-19) and draw controls (17-10).
