PHILADELPHIA — The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team erased a four-goal second-half deficit but fell in overtime to VCU, 16-15, on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
After VCU opened the scoring, the Hawks responded with five of the next six goals to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter, fueled by two goals apiece from
Kate Fuhrman and
Megan Sanelli.
The Rams answered with a decisive run, scoring five straight goals in the opening five minutes of the second quarter to regain the lead.
Olivia McCloskey ended a near 10-minute scoring drought for Saint Joseph's, but VCU extended its advantage to 9-6 before
Riley Miller scored with four seconds remaining in the half to trim the deficit to two.
VCU pushed its lead to as many as four goals in the third quarter before Fuhrman completed her hat trick to make it 13-10 entering the fourth. After a Rams goal early in the final frame, Saint Joseph's mounted a late rally with goals from Miller and Sanelli. McCloskey ignited a three-goal run over the final 6:20, capped by Miller's free-position goal with 59 seconds remaining to tie the game at 15-15.
The Hawks had two chances in the final 10 seconds but could not convert, sending the game to overtime.
VCU secured possession on the opening draw, and after a save by
Liana Moli, Rachel Koeneke collected the rebound and scored the game-winner to lift the Rams to the 16-15 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kate Fuhrman scored four goals with an assist, moving into the program's top 10 with 123 career goals. She also climbed the all-time points list and is six points shy of 200 for her career.
- Alexa Capozzoli totaled five points (one goal, four assists), increasing her career total to 239 points — four shy of the program record. She also pushed her assist total to 137, the most in program history by nearly 30.
- Riley Miller added five points (three goals, two assists).
- Olivia McCloskey and Megan Sanelli each recorded hat tricks.
- Emma Yoder led the Hawks with seven draw controls as Saint Joseph's held a 21-13 advantage. The Hawks also led in shots, 32-30, while both teams placed 24 shots on goal.
- Kaylyn Williams recorded four caused turnovers to lead the defense.
