Biography

Served as the SJU men's cross country coach from 1946 through 1960... Served as men's track coach from 1947 through 1950 and again from 1953 through 1960... In 1949, was appointed director of athletics, serving in that capacity until 1960, taking a leave of absence in 1951-52... Compiled a coaching record of 82-10 as a cross country coach, including 11 MAC titles from 1947 through 1958... Guided the 1955 and 1956 cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships... The 1956 team placed second at IC4A Championships for the program's best-ever finish... Recorded 31 straight dual meet wins from 1947 through 1950 with back-to-back 9-0 records in 1949 and 1950, which remain the best marks in SJU history... As athletic director, oversaw completion of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse in 1949 and the addition of men's soccer program as a varsity sport in 1958... One of the founding administrators of the Philadelphia Big Five, which was formed in 1955-56... Bertelsman is a product of the University of Illinois and a native of Wynnewood, Pa.
