PHILADELPHIA (11/30/03) - Saint Joseph's senior Jameer Nelson has been named the Player of the Week both the Atlantic 10 Conference and Philadelphia Big 5, earning both awards for the second consecutive week. Nelson shares the A-10 award with Keith Waleskowski of Dayton. Nelson averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists to lead the 13th-ranked Hawks to a pair of road wins over Boston University and Old Dominion. It marks the seventh conference Player of the Week award of his career. Waleskowski, a 6-8 senior forward, was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2003 EA Sports Maui Invitational as he led Dayton to the tournament title. In the 71-56 win at Boston University (11/25), Nelson had 13 points, a team-high seven rebounds, eight assists and five steals. The National Player of the Year candidate had a team-best 24 points, five rebounds and six assists to lead the Hawks to the 75-72 win at Old Dominion. With the Hawks leading 72-70 and time running out on the shot clock, Nelson swished a 38-foot shot with nine seconds remaining to provide the final margin. The consensus Preseason All-America went 12-for-24 from the field and 10-for-14 from the foul line in the two contests. Nelson and the 3-0 Hawks open the home season on Tuesday, December 2 when they host San Francisco at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Game time is 7 p.m.
