BILL PHILLIPS NAMED VERIZON SECOND TEAM ACADEMIC ALL AMERICAN

PHILADELPHIA (03/07/02) - Saint Joseph's University men's basketball player Bill Phillips has been named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-America Men's Basketball Second Team. The team is selected by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A senior forward, Phillips set an Atlantic 10 Conference record for three-point accuracy this season, hitting 30-of-56 from behind the arc in league play for 53.6 percentage. The Hawks captain also led the team and ranked eighth in the A-10 in rebounding with a 7.3 average while placing fourth on the team in scoring with an 11.3 average. A second team all-conference selection, he leads the A-10 and is on a school record pace for three-point percentage, hitting 52.2 percent overall (48-92). One of two Hawks to start all 28 games this season, Phillips scored a career-high 26 points against nationally-ranked Gonzaga on New Year's Eve. Currently he has accumulated 1,181 points and 809 rebounds in his career. A two-time A-10 Student Athlete of the Year selection and a three-time Verizon Academic All-District honoree, Phillips graduated in May, 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance (3.63 g.p.a.). A 2001 Verizon Academic All-America Third Team honoree last season earned a 3.93 grade point average this past semester while working on his master's degree in financial services.
