PHILADELPHIA (11/08/02)- Over 50 former Hawks were honored in the third annual Hawk Hoop Hysteria and the Saint Joseph's University men's basketball fans were treated to their first real look at the 2002-2003 Hawk team on Friday night at the Fieldhouse.
In the opening game, the SJU junior varsity team took on a team of former Hawks including Rodney Blake ('88), Mark Bass ('96), Bob Lojewski ('85), Harold Rasul ('98), Tom Haggerty ('78), Michael Thomas ('78) and Richard Stewart ('91). The Hawk alums easily defeated the current junior varsity team.
In the feature attraction, the "Grey" Hawks downed the "Crimson" Hawks, 60-53, in a tightly-contested battle. Junior
Jameer Nelson looked in mid-season form, scoring a game-high 19 points while dishing five assists against zero turnovers. Junior
Tyrone Barley turned in a strong offensive display, tallying 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field (2-3 3-pointers) while dishing four assists.
Freshman
Chet Stachitas chipped in nine points and recorded a game-high four steals. Senior
Alexandre Sazonov added eight points and three blocks.
For the Crimson, sophomore
Delonte West and red-shirt freshman
Dwayne Jones led the way with 15 points each. West also grabbed a game-high six rebounds while dishing four assists. Jones,who shot 7-of-10 from the field, pulled down five caroms.
Sophomore
Pat Carroll added 10 points and a game-high six assists (0 turnovers) while sophomore
John Bryant (7 points, 5 rebounds) also played well.
The Hawks next public showing will be on November 23 when they open the season at Boston College (7:30 p.m.).
