Bill Ferguson

Biography

Inducted with The Mighty Mites. He is responsible for putting St. Joseph's on the "national map" in men's basketball... Ferguson is the longest tenured SJU coach... In his for 25 years, he recorded a compiling 309 wins against just 208 losses... His win total still stands as a SJU record... Area sportswriters dubbed six Hawk players "The Mighty Mites", in the mid 30s. These six players, Matt Guokas, John McMenamin, Dan Kenney, Jim Smale, John Kenney and Joe Oakes arrived on Hawk Hill as freshmen during the 1934-35 season and compiled a 54-17 won-loss record during their four years... In their first year, the Mites posted a 12-3 record with Guokas leading the team in scoring with 145 points and McMenamin tallying a city-high 21 points in a win over Ursinus... As sophomores, the group went 14-5, but two of their losses occurred without the services of an injured Guokas... One memorable victories highlighted their 15-4 record as juniors, were the upset of Clair Bee's Nationally-Ranked Long Island team, 46-44 in double overtime... Dan Kenney's follow shot in the final minute proved to be the game-winner... The other game was a 37-36 come-from-behind win over Penn in front of a record crowd of 10,682 at The Palestra... Oakes, the "sixth man", calmly sank two free throws with 19 seconds to play for the decisive points... The group capped their careers with a 13-5 mark that included wins over Mississippi State, Creighton, North Carolina and Duquesne... Product of Roman Catholic High School... Hails from Sharon Hill, Pa.
