Contact Mike Glavin
Mike Glavin enters his second year director of men's and women's cross country and track and field in 2023-24, and 36th overall as leader of the men's cross country and track and field programs. A 1978 graduate of SJU, Glavin was previously named director of the track and field programs at his alma mater on June 17, 2013.
A five-time A-10 Cross Country Coach of the Year, Glavin led the Hawks to their fifth A-10 Championship in 2015 following additional championships in 1992, 1998, 2000, and 2009. Glavin also coached Saint Joseph's to A-10 Cross Country runner-up finishes 10 times: 1990, 1993, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2012, 2013, 2017, and 2019.
Under Glavin’s leadership, the Saint Joseph’s men’s track and field and cross country program has produced a total of 191 Atlantic 10 champions - 109 indoor and 82 outdoor - in addition to 57 All-Conference cross country honorees, 39 NCAA East Preliminary Rounds qualifiers, 14 IC4A track and field champions, and seven NCAA Finals qualifiers and 79 Academic All-Conference performers, seven Academic All-District honorees, and two Academic All-Americans.
SJU has also seen seven athletes earn A-10 Cross Country Runner of the Year honors and four earn A-10 Most Outstanding Cross Country Rookie Performer honors as well as seven student-athletes named A-10 Track and Field Performer of the Year, two selected Track and Field Rookie of the Year and one chosen as A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year under Glavin’s tenure.
On the 2019 cross country scene, Glavin coached the Hawks to the Atlantic 10 Championship silver medal, marking the eighth time over an 11-year span that SJU finished as one of the top three teams in the conference. Glavin guided Zach Michon to the individual title as Michon and Matthew Scarpill earned All-Conference honors. Just weeks later, Glavin coached the Hawks to the IC4A Championship bronze medal, marking the fifth time in a seven-year span that SJU finished as one of the top three teams at the IC4A meet; Michon, Scarpill, Bobby Hastie, and George Steinhoff earned All-East honors.
The 2019-20 indoor track and field season saw Michon win the A-10 Indoor Track and Field Championships individual mile and 3000m titles en route to Most Outstanding Track Performer accolades while anchor leg Scarpill and the DMR turned in a second-place performance that exemplified #THWND spirit.
The 2018-19 seasons saw the emergence of Michon both on the trails and on the track, as Glavin coached the then-junior to All-Conference cross country honors, the indoor conference mile title, and a strong 1500m performance at the NCAA East Regional Preliminaries.
On the 2017 cross country scene, Glavin coached the Hawks to the A-10 Championship silver medal, marking the seventh time over a nine-year span that SJU finished as one of the top three teams in the conference. Glavin coached Dan Savage, back from injury, and Michon to All-Conference honors. Just weeks later, Glavin coached the Hawks to the IC4A Championship bronze medal, marking the fourth time in a five-year span that SJU finished as one of the top three teams at the IC4A meet; all five of SJU's scorers - Savage, Michon, David Dorsey, Jack Daly, and Collin Crilly, earned All-East honors.
During the 2017-18 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, Glavin coached the 4x800m relay to a second-place finish at both the indoor and outdoor A-10 meets, a third-place finish at the IC4A outdoor meet, and a fifth-place finish at the IC4A indoor meet. Individually, long sprinter Steve Thompson went third in the A-10's indoor 800m and fifth in the IC4A's indoor and outdoor 800m. Additionally, Glavin's Sprint Medley Relay group shattered SJU's 20-year-old record at the Penn Relays.
On the 2016 cross country scene, Glavin coached the Hawks to the IC4A Championship silver medal for the third time in four years; six Hawks - Jimmy Daniels, Dorsey, Crilly, Justin Branco, Josh Clark, and Savage - earned IC4A All-East honors. Glavin also coached Clark to A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer accolades at the league meet as the Hawks placed fifth overall.
Glavin coached Thompson to the A-10 title in the indoor 800m and went on to coach Torey Doaty (400m hurdles) and Savage (3000m steeplechase) to quarterfinal performances at the 2017 NCAA East Regional Preliminary Rounds.
Between the 2016 cross country season and 2016-17 track and field seasons, Glavin coached 10 All-Conference selections, including one indoor track and field champion, 21 All-East selections, and two NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Rounds qualifiers. Glavin also coached Michon (mile) and John Walker (1500m), who were named to the inaugural A-10 All-Rookie Teams in their respective events.
Additionally, Saint Joseph’s saw five Hawks earn A-10 Academic All-Conference honors and as a program and earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team cross country accolades for the fifth consecutive year.
On the 2015 cross country scene, Glavin coached the Hawks to the A-10 title, IC4A silver medal, and a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. A pair of Hawks - Paul Szulewski and Daniels - finished in the top five to earn A-10 All-Conference honors, while Daniels, Szulewski, and Quinn Davis earned All-East accolades at the IC4A meet. The A-10 win marked the fifth league title in program history and first since 2009 as Glavin took home his fifth career A-10 Cross Country Coach of the Year honor.
Under Glavin’s direction, the Hawks turned in six championship performances between the 2015-16 A-10 indoor and outdoor meets, including repeat champions with Alec Peabody in the indoor and outdoor 400m, Doaty in the indoor 500m and outdoor 400m hurdles, and both indoor and outdoor 4x400m relay groups. Additionally, Glavin coached what was arguably the most successful 4x400m relay in program history of David Henderson, Chris Banks, Doaty, and Peabody to historic success as the group tore down both the indoor and outdoor program records en route to SJU’s first IC4A indoor title in program history and a 15th-place showing at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds.
Between the 2015 cross country season and 2015-16 indoor track and field seasons, Glavin coached 16 All-Conference selections, including 12 track and field champions, 26 All-East selections, including eight track and field champions, and six NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Rounds qualifiers.
Additionally, Saint Joseph’s saw three Hawks earn A-10 Academic All-Conference honors and one standout earn CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades. As a program, the Hawks earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team cross country accolades for the fourth consecutive year.
In 2013-14, Glavin coached the Hawks to second-place finishes at the 2013 A-10 and IC4A Cross Country Championships and to a third-place finish at the 2014 A-10 Indoor Track and Field Championships. Between the 2013 cross country and 2014 indoor and outdoor track seasons, Glavin coached 25 All-Conference selections, including 11 First Team track and field honorees, along with 22 IC4A All-East selections, an NCAA Outdoor Track East Regional qualifier, and the A-10 Cross Country Most Outstanding Rookie Performer. Under his direction, the Hawks also turned in three Academic All-Conference selections and earned their second consecutive USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors for both the cross country and track and field seasons.
In 2012-13, Glavin coached Kevin McDonnell, who became the program's first male All-American since 1986. He also coached 19 IC4A All-East selections, eight All-Conference selections, two NCAA Outdoor Track East Regional qualifiers, and one A-10 Academic All-Conference honoree.
Glavin returned to his alma mater after a highly successful 10-year stint as the track and cross country coach at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, N.J. During his tenure there, he led the cross country team to an astounding 110-0 record, including three state championships in 1984, 1985 and 1988. His track record was an impressive 60-18, which included four South Jersey championships and the 1989 state crown. Glavin was inducted into the Paul VI Alumni Hall of Fame in October of 2009.
As a Hawk, Glavin established numerous records, including the outdoor track records for the three-mile run and 5k and the indoor track records for the mile and two-mile runs. On the cross country course, Glavin held the Belmont Plateau record with a time of 25:36 and is one of just two Hawks in program history to have twice qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships; the other Hawk, McDonnell, was coached by Glavin.
Glavin holds a master's degree in mathematics from Villanova University and taught at Haddonfield High School (N.J.) for over 20 years. He was inducted into the SJU Track Hall of Fame in 1983.
Glavin resides in Ardmore, Pa. with his wife, Julie, and sons, Graeme and Michael.
