Sept. 29, 2004

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Three goals in the opening 12:14 powered the Saint Joseph's field hockey team (5-4) to a 3-0 victory over Drexel (3-5) on Finnesey Field. Sophomore Maureen Casserly scored twice and Nicole Antonini added a goal for SJU.

Casserly, a transfer from Ohio University, put the Hawks up quickly scoring her first goal in the Crimson and Gray just 2:14 into the match. Senior Shannon Scott played a free hit into the circle and Casserly redirected the ball into the cage.

St. Joe's increased its advantage to 2-0 less than five minutes later on Antonini's goal. Sophomore Lauren Luft picked up the ball on the right wing and hit a crisp cross through the circle. Antonini, who was running free on the weak side then slapped the ball home.

Casserly then closed out the scoring at the 12:14 mark. She bulled past a couple of defenders and slipped the ball home for a 3-0 Hawk lead.

Freshman netminder Rebecca Cunfer made five saves to post her second consecutive shutout and third overall. She extended her scoreless streak to 166:40. Her counterpart, Drexel's Katie Dougherty, registered two saves.

The Dragons held a slim 4-3 advantage on penalty corners, but the Hawks owned a 9-6 edge in shots.

The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, but was postponed do to inclement weather. The victory snapped a four-game slide by the Hawks against the Dragons and was their first win over DU since 1999.
