Men's Rowing Opens With Strong Effort at Navy Day Regatta

Oct. 16, 2004

PHILADELPHIA - With expectations high, the Saint Joseph's men's rowing team opened the 2004-05 season with an impressive performance at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River. Early races battled a fierce headwind and white capped waves battered the crews as they raced against a strong field.

SJU began the day with the Lightweight 4 competing in the Heavyweight event. Rowing a strong race in conditions not suited for lighter crews, the Light 4 finished a strong 12th place.

The Freshman 8 earned SJU's best finish of the day, placing a strong second behind Penn's A Boat. The Lightweight Freshmen 8 finished in the middle of th pack, despite racing against primarily heavyweight boats.

The JV 8 also showed a lot of speed finishing a strong second out of 10 boats in the Dad Vail 8 event.

The Varsity 8 had a single goal in mind for its race - Beat Dad Vail champion Temple. The V8 rowed an aggressive race right from the start, picking up speed as the crew blew by th boathouse and finished the 2.5 mile course strong. In the end, SJU finished 4 seats ahead of Temple with a solid position in 9th place overall.

Lightweight Varsity 8 results were unavailable.
