Monmouth Defeats Men's Soccer, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA - Monmouth jumped out to a two-goal lead and handed Saint Joseph's a 2-1 defeat in men's soccer action at the Philadelphia University/Adam's Mark Hotel Soccer Classic. The loss drops SJU to 0-3.

Tom Poznanski put Monmouth on the board at 20:03 with the assist from Kevin Hartwyck.

MU held onto that lead until Steven Holloway added the second goal at 73:58 on a penalty kick that he put past SJU keeper Chris DiStefano. Sophomore Chris Powell got the Hawks on the board just 21 seconds later with at 74:19, but SJU was unable to score the equalizer.

Monmouth outshot Saint Joseph's, 16-7, and DiStefano made seven saves. Monmouth's Frank Gullace made three saves in the victory.

In the first match of the day, Binghamton rallied for a 3-1 win over Philadelphia.

Saint Joseph's returns to action on Sunday in the tournament when it takes on Binghamton at 11 a.m.
