Seniors Francisco Velazquez and Van Homer Pangilinan both advanced on the opening day of competition at the 2004 Penn Tennis Classic. Velazquez moved out of the A Flight, while Pangilinan was victorius in B FLight singles. The tandem also posted a win together in teh doubles competition.
Velazquez, seeded fourth in the Flight A Singles bracket, need three sets to defeat Maryland's David Reichsfeld. After Velazquez easily won the opening frame, Reichsfled took the second set. Velazquez then regrouped to post the 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 win. Velazquez faces Penn's Tas Tobias in the round of 16 on Saturday.
Pangilinan moved on in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Manhattan's Filip Szymith in the B Flight. He squares off against the third-seed, Penn's Joseph Lok on Saturday.
Teaming in doubles, Velazquez and Pangilinan defeated Maryland's Scott Fink and Jon O'Rourke 8-4, but then lost an 8-6 decision to Penn's Mikhail Bekker and David Lynn.
